First of all buy a .50 caliber. A good gun to start with is the CVA Stag Horn Magnum for well under $200. It is just as accurate as any other muzzleloader out there. You could buy a nice used TC Black Diamond for that price: This is another accurate gun.

Brod Man ... welcome to the sport. On a limited budget I would ask a few questions. Are you going to put a scope on the rifle? If so is the price of the scope included in the $200.00 limit? Also are there any restrictions in the State you intend to hunt that we should be made aware of? Some States have action restrictions, ignition restrictions. Your description of where you live is not all that helpful. Are you of small build or able to handle a lot of your age? Most 14 year olds have very little problems with muzzleloaders and standard hunting loads.

A .50 caliber would be the best choice for all of your hunting needs. Something as simple as a CVA Wolf, Buckhorn Magnum, are all around $150.00 and will shoot a sabot with open sights well out to 100 yards or better. Then there are NEF Sidekicks which can be purchased for under $200.00

Another place to look are the gun auction sites. Many times you can find a Knight Wolverine II for under $150.00 which, while old technology is one fine shooting rifle. Knights have excellent triggers, and barrels. Don't be fooled on the new technology being better, it is only new technology. Maybe a little easier to clean, but no better shooter then an old sidelock rifle.

If I only had $200.00 and norifles, I would look on the gun auction sites and try to get a Knight Wolverine LK-93 or LK-II and that would be all the rifle I would ever need. They have great triggers, barrels, and will do anything the new fancy rifles will do, all for a lot less money.

The Buck Horn is a very good gun for the money. That gun has two action screws and it is easy to pillar bed the action and float the barrel.A friend did that with his and it is a tack driver. As cayugad suggested, there are lots of really good used guns out there at great prices.

I would get a 50 caliber for sure. If you could spend the extra, a new T/C Omega would run you about $250 at Wal-Mart, maybe $150 usedat a gun/pawn shop in your area. If not: NEF Sidekick, CVA Optima, CVA Kodiak, or Traditions Pursuit.

NEF Sidekick

Traditions Pursuit

If you choose to order these guns online, be sure you have handled them in person beforehand. If something doesn't feel right, don't get the gun. At 14, it probably wouldn't be worth it to get a youth rifle, as you'll quickly outgrow it.

Seeing how you are still young, go with irons sight. There may come a day when you get to do an out of state hunt that only allows open sights and if you get used to the scope idea, you're done for.
I scoped my muzzleloader for a couple weeks and took it off lol. It just got to boring. One thing you will want to replace are the plastic sights, they will throw you off badly. $40 for tru glo sights from cabelas and you'll have a perfect hunting rig.
