Default tried 777 in the mustang today

As much as I hated to part with the $$$$ ($27/lb.) at the local WalMart, I broke down and bought a pound ofT-7 ffg today. Really wanted fffg, but 4# of ffg was their total inventory of loose powder.
Took the Lyman mustang to the range this afternoon and tried a 3 shot group at 50 yards with the 250 gr. Barnes Expanders it seems to prefer.
I think I found the foundation to build accuracy on. At 50 yards it shot justabout 1 1/4"with open (fiber optic) sights, and the first shot out of a dry clean barrel is included in the group.
Iused 100 grains of T-7, but I will try some different charge weights next time. (after I buy more bullets)
Also with the Winchester T-7 primers there was no indication of a crud ring. I had a pack of T/C cheap shot bullets (240 gr)in my gear, so I shot 6 times without wiping the bore, and it was still free of a ring at that point. The cheap shots didn't group quite as well as the Barnes, but they still were under 2", but grouped high. Good enough for plinking, and they might do better with a charge adjustment.

Dang, you are throwing some money down range, between the 777 and Barnes...

Not sure where you are but if theres a Sportsmans Warehouse anywhere near you they run $19 to $20 a pound for 777 FF and FFF.

I was at my Wal Mart today and noticed the price increase they stuck on their powder as well. WOW!! then of course I asked for certain items that they claimed they no longer carried. Good thing I looked around as they had a shelf full of them. They were so surprised..

When you're working up a load, I might suggest swabbing if not between every shot, at least every other. It might tighten up your groups even more. Triple Se7en 2f is a good powder. When shooting sabots, it is my go to powder most of the time. Although I have a couple rifles that are real fussy..

Nice shooting there.

wabi

I shot 250 Speers and 260 Noslers with 110 grain T7-2f, and, most of the comments that I have read about Barnes says they need a pretty stiff boot behind them to get their best accuracy. I do not know that for a fact as I do not shoot Barnes....

I wish you had been able to find some 3f but the 2f will work just fine with 209 ignition... I am sure hoping that powder will drop after hunting season has started. I have great supply right now and I try to pick up the Wal-Mart sales at the end of the year.
