Default 100 yards with the flinter

Took the .54 flintlock CVA Mountain Rifle out twice today and my first outing was @ 75 yards and then 100 once everything was on sight. So far ive managed 2" groups at both 75 and 100 yards. I lowered my charge down to 80 grains triple 7 due to my first 3 shots @ 100 being a 5" group. Once i lowered it down to 80 grains t7, everything was good and held 2" groups. More shooting tomorrow, i want to adjust the sights down to where the tip of the front sight is exactly where it will hit. I dont want any of the 1 or 2" high @ 100 yards thing. The patches are getting burned of big time from the triple7 so i will pick up some felt wads and see how it does with them. I also tried two different patches, .010 and a .015 and the thicker patch made no difference. I will use the .010 due to the ease of loading it allows. Once i get it where i want it tomorrow, i'll pull out the 348 grain powerbelts and have a little fun with those and see how they do. They might be ok out to 50-75 yards. They shot pretty good out of my traditions at that range. So far my home chipped flints are standing up good and getting lots of spark from them.

I tried the 348 grain powerbelts today @ 20 yards.. After those first 3 shots i should have stopped. It was a 3" group and got worse as soon as i moved it out to 30 yards lol. Its ok, when i bought the rifle i had a pretty good idea what the twist was so, its fine. It was still nice to try some conicals out of it. Next time im going to try some ball-ets and see what those can do. So far im dialed in for hunting season with a PRB load. Now if only the days would end sooner so hunting time could get here already.

Thats better! I went out again today with the flinter and 100 yards. My first shot hit an 1 1/2" from the other 1st i took a day or 2 ago! Still 8-9" low on the first shot but this is what has be stumped. # 2-3-4 shots were all 9" high! #5 through 12 didnt even hit the board! On my last shot i took #12 shot, the wind had changed direction and i was able to see where the bullet hit. 3 feet IN FRONT of the target! I dont think this triple 7 in a flintlock is a good idea anymore. Now maybe if i were to swab the barrel CLEAN after each shot, it would be worth it, But i need something that will keep atleast a 2 shot group while im hunting. Tomorrow i will up my charge back up to 90 grains and fire and see where that puts me. Afterwards i'll just swab until i get the sights adjusted to where it will be dead on. Its funny how the triple 7 grouped tight at 50 yards but sucked big time @ 100. Ah well, it will work for now. Just as long as #1 shot goes where i want it, it will do for now until i get some Goex ffg powder.
I have a BIG box set up for tomorrow's shooting. I want atleast 3 close grouping shots before i put the rifle away until hunting season.

Frontier, Here's what works for me...First shot...018 pillow ticking that you buy from WalMart, lubed of course...Second shot...015 patch (T/C or Oxyoke)...This is if I don't clean between shots...

I know you mentioned your groups are good with burned patches...I'll just tell you, I've never been so lucky...I believe the patch might even be the most important part of the total equation...

Hey gander, have you ever tried the 300 grain Lee 54 caliber REALs? They're pretty short and might be just the thing for that flinter.
