Default Range duty

Well, went to the range today to see if I could get decent groups out of the 250g speers. For some reason they spray everywhere. I have the 300g xtp shooting an inch high at 100 yards with 100g 777 2F. I'll keep 3 loads at inch and half group and at some point load 4 and 5 will be a flyer.

I have tried everywhere from 80g to 100g of 777 with the 250g speer without success. Any suggestions? Do the 250s need pushed a little harder?

Same thing happened to me this evening. I was shooting 70 grains t7 in the mountain rifle and the first shot was dead center but 8" to the left. fire 4 more shots and they all hit 10" low! Run back to the house to get a screw driver and some more roundballs, adjust sight, adjust my charge to 90 grains, 7" high, adjust the sight down, 4" high, adjust more and i get it 2" high @ 75. Next 4 shots we all over the place. Its stressful trying to figure this stuff out. How can the first shot be dead on and the next 10" low. I'll figure this out tomorrow now that i got it on sight.

That really sounds like barrel temp to me... polymere sabots do not like heat they get real spongy and will lose pressure. If you have some Harvester sabots you might try them the use a different plastic.

What are you doing between shots? same routine each time? Next time you get out test your barrel temp with you hand just above the breech plug - see if the temp is about the same each time you shoot. Nothing you can do about the outside temp but the barrel temp you can control. The time between shots will increase as you shoot also as the barrel heats and retains heat into the 2nd, then 3rd shot. I shoot during the summer but i really do not change a thing on the gun.

The shorter 250's do not contact as much of the barrel as the longer 300's do so in the heat you maybe getting better stabilization with the longer 300's

The one saying I use a lot during the summer - trust your guns history not what is does during the heat....

Just guessing...
