Default Range Report

I took my new Renegade stock and put my new 58cal barrel on it for a combination of a totally new gun. My 58cal barrel is a TC 1-48" twist. I was shooting a .570 Hornady roundball, .015 patch lubed with mink oil, and a dry wad. I started out at 90gr worked the load up to 120gr Goex FFG. I really like this load. I am getting accuracy out of it but I need practice. I think 120gr FFG will be my load. All my shots were within the kill zone of an elk. I am not sure If I like the sights or not. I think I like the sights on my old Renegade barrel better. It is easier to see and shoot the older ones for me. I really can not wait to go elk hunting. I am sure once I get more practice I will be shooting better. I need to be more consistant with how I line the beed up and everything. Last year I started out the same way with my 54cal but got better as I practiced. By the way, when I pull the trigger, the gun lets me know! I would still rather have an old Renegade stock but the new stock is fine. I found an older Renegade just like the one I had that my Grandpa's cousin might sell me. He got it when my Grandpa got his.

Cant wait to go elk hunting!

I swear, if you fellas keep talking about shooting these side lock muzzleloaders, I'm going to have to get me one and join the party in the near future.

How heavy is a .570 roundball?

Sounds great Sharp Shooter. I bet that 120 grains and that big conical does rock you. Have you tried any roundball out of that barrel yet?

I was shooting roundballs! Next time I am going to try some 525gr Great Plains conicals. I would use those if it got windy since the wind will not push those as much. My primary projectile will be the roundball though. They weigh 280gr.

Sounds like the load should have some authority to it. I'd say a roundball that heavy should pack some serious hurt when it hits!
What would you consider your maximum range for elk with that load?

That really sounds like you have a great rifle and I commend you on your limits of range. It shows good common sense on your part..
