Default Plainsman rifle kit

It just so happens i was given a plainsman rifle kit, it is a .50 cal black powder rifle, i have hunted muzzleloader before but have never put one together from a kit, the probelm is there are no instructions on assembly, i was just wondering if there are any tips or advice from those of you that have done kits before and possible instructions, thanks for your help

Basically.. first test fit everything together. See if the lock fits true to the wood. And a hint, if wood does have to come out, remove a little, check again, remove a little check again...

When you're ready to finish the stock that will be your choice as to the color. I saw some that stained the stock and polyurathane coated the outside.. Not the best in my opinion. I always liked a true oil rubbed in look. It all depends on what you want.

Most of the kits, things fit pretty close, so take your time and work carefully. You could be all right.

Most of the kits I've done were easy. The fit was very close and took little or no wood removal to finish the inletting.
The hardest part (for me)is deciding on a finish and having the patience to go slow at that stage.
Last kit I did was a Plains pistol a few years ago, and I got in such a hurry that I stained the stock, gave it a coat of linseed oil, and headed to the range. Thing shoots so good I never have taken it out of service long enough to finish the stock. Just give it more oil if it looks dry and keep shooting it.......

i would first call the company (cva-lyman?) and get the directions. the directions have to be on file somewhere. i doubt if there would be a safety issue with assembly but you never know. i would also stick with the tue oil type finishes.i think its made from linseed oil. it dries in minutes and spreads thinner than polyuerathane so you dont have to watch for runs. as far as stain i would go custom.

More than likely going to have to call deer creek. They bought out all of cva's traditional rifles and items.
