I have never sized a bullet more than 1 or 2 thousandths. I wonder what would happen if you had to size it .003 or .004??? I will search the Lee molds. Thanks, Tom.
Update: Lee actually shows a good looking bullet for the 500 S&W. It looks like it is dropping at .501 and 440 grains. It shows as a gas check design. I wonder how the GC design would affect accuracy without the GC??? A wad maybe??? Tom.

Tom, I use the Lyman 457122HP .45/70 bullet in two .45 muzzleloaders. I size it down from 457 to .454, then to .451. This dowes not seem to affect its accuracy at all. However, it is a plainm base bullet, but I do use a WonderWad under it, in both the .47/70 cartridge at .457", and in the ML at .451". Very good bullet.
I THINK that if you use a wad under that GC bullet, it should work OK w/o the gascheck. However, if you sized it to a sliding fit WITH the gascheck in place, it should work OK. I don't think the presence of the sized-down gascheck would interfere with loading, and the bullet would still swage up to correct diameter on firing, even with the GC in place. I would try it both ways-with ther GC and W/O the GC. But I'd use a Wonmder Wad in both cases. I have found that I can shoot pure lead bullets with a Wonder Wad and NO OTHER lube, and get good accuracy with NO LEADING. This works for me at velocities up to 1700+ FPS.
This group was shot at 100 yards with a .50 Maxiball cast of pure lead, with ONLY a Wonder Wad under it for lubrication.
I get similar results from a .45/70 with nothing but a Wonder Wad for lube with PURE LEAD bullets, with both IMR 4064 and black powder at 1300+ FPS from the Lyman 457122HP bullet.......
