I did a little shooting yesterday, wanted to try out the 430g TC maxi-balls in my great plains rifle at ranges longer than 100 yards. Was dead on at 70 yards, then fired a few shots at 127 yards. Seemed to be about 3"-4" low, but the sight picture on my target at that range was not good, bead covers practically the entire paper, hard to be real precise, but still shot a 4 shot group of about 5". I then fired a three shot group at 100 yds which resulted in the picture below, a 1" group! Sometimes you just get a littlelucky. The rifle is shooting about 2" high at 100. By far the best this rifle has ever shot. It's equipped with tang peep sight and fiber front site, 34" sight radius helps accuracy until the bead just covers everything..... I swabbed the barrel with at least 2 spit patches between all shots.
I triedtwo more shots at 127 yards, ended up with a 6 shot group of 6.5" at that range. I would have that was not possible with this rifle 3 weeks ago. Just goes to show you can never shoot enough.
I was pretty much sold on the maxi-balls as of my last outing, this confirms it. This will be my elk load in this rifle, as thisgun has a real preference for these bullets.
I have the same problem at long distances. The sights basically cover the target. I mean how can you get accurate when you are not certain where the sights are. Peep sights help for sure. That would be an excellent load your shooting there..

Well, it seems to me like your rifle shoots those Maxiballs very well. BUT you need better sights on it for ranges beyond 100 yards!
The tang sight on the rear should be OK,but I wouldreplace the front sight with a Sourdough type blade. These let you hold on a specific spot on the target much more precisely than those fiber-optic type where the brightness confuses the eye, especially out yonder a ways!

Thanks for the idea. These kind of groups make up for not even hitting the paper at thosedistances in past years. I do like the visibility of the fiber sight in lower light conditions and the easy pick up at any time. Will have to experiment a little with thissight and anelk silhouette, having those extra points of reference around the aiming pointwill probably help. That said, there is stillenough time between now and hunting season to try out a different sight. Better precision is usually a good thing.I just recently put an aperture sight on my Beeman air rifle which has a blade front sight, but I haven't taken the time to shoot much with it yet. Need to do more shooting with it to keep tuned up, and it doesn't have that sharp curved butt plate like the Lyman that occasionally gouges my shoulder!
Of course, you can also put a scope on it. I use the Brownell's flat, tip-off22 mount base and rings. You'd think they could not stand up to the recoil, but they do!!

82.5g with a 430g bullet hitting like that at 100 yards, yes, you have an elk bullet. Very nice. Chap Gleason

It looks like the rifle will do it's part in fine fashion, the rest is up to me. Shooting off abench is one thing, shooting in hunting conditions is quite another.
