Ihad an opportunity to shoot Friday AM (at 92.5 yards). I shot all Barnes bullets to thest thier accuracy in my new 10 ML. Here are the results using AA 5744, 44g, Federal Primer, no swabing between shots:
Knight Ultimate Slam 285g (made by Barnes) supplied sabot
Both bullets loaded fairly easy. The TMZ was the more accurate of the two, with about a 2" group. The Knight Ultimate Slam had about a 3" group. I will work the load for the TMZ. I am also going to Order some Harvester Scorpions PT 300g and some
TC SW with the Super Glide Sabot, since the SW shot so good for me before. I hope they are bonded, only $9 for 15 so I am not out a lot if they are not. I also ordered a box of Traditions PT, which are the Parker Ballistic Extremese 275g. The most accurate of the bullets I will work the load up and down from the 44g I am now shooting.

That would sure be a good hard hitting load. Nice shooting there.

The solid copper Barnes bullets are probably the second best bullet out there! course there are a lot of people that will tell you they are the best....

Sorry I forgot to specify the yardage, it was 92.5 yards. Yes, I have heard a lot about Barnes and there are a lot of Barnes believers out there, so they must be raving about some, so I had to find out. I think the TMZ has promise, but I didn't like what I got with the "origonal Barnes", maybe it was the sabot, will try some MMPs next with them. Got a bunch of MMP short black, #12, #24 and EZ-petal 3 so I have all 4 kinds + some Crush Rib. I thought the barnes would group a bit tighter, the TMZ I think can be tighten up maybe 1/2 or 1 inch. But I didn't feel the Origonal Barnes shot well, sorta 1, 2, 3 in a column and then 2 inches from that 4 and 5 in another column, seems like to me it should have been a tighter group instead of up and down but 3"+. Chap

I almost bought some of those sabots some months back. $17 for 12 and i was sure to put them back up on the rack lol. Plus they were only 200 grain.
TheKnight Ultimate Slamswere $17 for 30 (which is not bad for a Barnes bullet). The TMZ were abotu a $1 each as I recall. I will pay a $1 for a hunting bullet, but not a plinking/shooting bullet, way too expensive for my blood. Chap

Chap, your experience/results were much the same as mine. The main reason I believe is bore to sabot fit. The diameter of bullet coupled with the packaged "stepped" yellow sabot due to the boattail design is too loose in my bore to perform like some other bullet/sabot combos. I have seen other shooters (savage and other ml's alike) aligning tosuch atheory.Meanwhile others who have a tighter bore love them. Such is life!! I have heard some mention about switching out the sabot but most mentioned a sub base requirement as well. I came to the realization my savage and barnes will not get along, fine by me as their are other options up to the task. I have all but decieded on a 300 gr SST with HPH24 sabot for my all around load for this fall, it shoots/loadsgreat and I know others who've used such an animal to harvest elk and moose as well as deer (deer and upis my reason for looking past the 250 pills). YTBD is powder/charge but I am confidentthat 4759 or H4198 coupled with the 300gr sst will get the job done, just need to do some temp testing to find out if their is any issues with H4198(if not it will be my powder as the extra fps - 2300 vs 2100 may come in handy here on the prairie's).
BTW, the ulimate slam bullet pictured is a spitfire MZ and not the "original" barnes you probably have seen mentioned by somesavage shooters. The "original" barnes bullet is a .458 XPB(pistol bullet/flat base) coupled with a orange mmp sabot. The problem is Barnes does a one time a year limited run and the demand is higher then the supply for the .458 xpb's.[&:]
Now their is nothing wrong with your groups, just after watchingothers printMOA I know its hard to swallow! Best of luck
BTW I like barnes bullets, I use the tsxforelk and moose in my CF's. As far as the muzzy has gone I always come back to hornady's. I have harvested wt, mule deer, black bear and moose with hornady's of one type or another.

Good shooting!!
I just ordered some more 300g SSTs, the are the ones with the new Superglide sabot, I hope they are bonded---Have to research it once I get the packaging. They were only $9 for 15 at MidSouth. I have some somebases, but I would prefer to shoot baseless rather than monkey around with a base. Another person on Doug's Savage board said to shoot a hotter powder and he suggested same powderthat you did, I need to visit Gander Mt soon and see if I can get a can. Thanks for your wisdom in this matter. Thanks for the correction on Origonal Barnes, I though I saw that Term on MidSouth with a bullet that had a small hole in the point, and it looked exactly like the Knight Ultimate Slam, but it doesn't have the boat tail.
As for my group sizes, I shot this with an SST 300g at 92.5 yards, so it is gonna be hard to live with that group and another bullet:
