I have a CVA trapper that I purchased some time ago that I am really fond of. I thinned down the stock and put on a recoil pad. I have had lots of fun over the years learning its likes and dislikes. About the only frontier that remains is round ball deer hunting. I wonder if anyone has had some experience with this particular barrel. It is a modified and the factory says to use a .690 ball. I thought that .725 was the measure of a 12 gauge. I guess I should mic it and see how far the modified choke has squeezed it down. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've been shooting a patched .690 ball out of my Pedersoli 12 ga. with a modified choke. I get good results out to 50 yds. I use 70gr of APP 2f. with a 1/2" fiber wad, then the patched RB. This is my favorite and most fun gun. BTW, I've carried it with me several times hog hunting and have yet to have a shot opportunity. I can't wait to see how it performs "real world".

I had a bunch of old paper hull foster slug loads that I took apart awhile back. with a paper patch and 80 grains of Goex 2f they were very accurate at 50 yards. Unfortunately I was having too much fun and shot em all up. I have never found a source for more other than cutting up more shells.Thanks for the reply, most of the guys around here are strictly
once a year in line shooter and think my primitive penchant is a little odd. I am going to get some .690 and take the 12 gauge to the timber this fall.

While true the bore of the 12 is .725 - .730 depending on who you ask. So I am guessing the .690 ball with a thick patch would work just fine. I shoot a .62 smoothbore and shoot a .600-.610 ball with a patch and it is accurate enough for me out to about 45 yard. After that I kind of loose faith in the accuracy, but I have a few more idea I want to try to see if I can stretch that distance a little.

I have some pillow ticking laying around, I had thought about using it. I really did have very good results with foster type slugs. I haven't really looked into finding a mold. It hated brenneke slugs. They are WAY to pricey to be pulling out of shells anyway.

I wonder how a .69 caliber minnie would shoot if you paper patched it? Lyman I think it is makes a .69 caliber minnie which is .685 diameter and weighs 730 grains. There are also molds to make 12 gauge shotgun slugs which are 475 grain and 525 grains. Also if the .690 diameter bullet is too small then I would look at a .715 diameter roundball and shoot it patched.

Thanks for the links, I never thought of a minie. That would be a hoot if it worked well. I have never gotten set up for pouring my own,my neighbor used to cast lots of .58s for me. I have moved and am thinking about getting a hot pot and some moulds. I might order some minies and try em before commiting to a mould.

That big ol flat nosed 525 slug would be serious medicine. My twelve gauge can't weigh 6 pounds. I might have to pick up my teeth after lighting off one of those puppies.

I cast off an outdoor turkey cooker burner. I bought a turkey cooker kit that came with the huge pot, the stand, the burner, and regulator. I got it at the end of the season for $19.95. I then wired an old gas stove burner grate to the stand and that supports the smelting pot. So I have the whole thing, plus a turkey cooker (which works really good by the way).

Then I got/had a Lyman ladle, a small Lyman smelting pot,some rapine mold lube, a bees wax candle, and made a scraper out of sheet metal. I built a drop box and lined it with leather so after I get them poured, I dump them into the leather lined box.

A man after my own heart. My wife and I just moved into our new home and she just had to get this propane Uberstove. She is used to me drying out my bp gun barrels in the oven after a cleaning ,but she drew the line at letting me melt lead on it. It has a high btu burner that is supposed to boil a gallon of water in under three minutes, it gave me ideas.
