All this talk about conicals got me thinking. How would the Savage fair with bore size projectiles? It has a 1 in 24" twist barrel. Savage does require, however, that BP or BPsubs ONLY be used with conicals. Anybody try? This may require a range trip

Worth a try. I have found that Hornady385 and 410 grain Great Plains bullets shoot reasonably well out of just about any gun, and spectacularly out of some.

Doegirl, might be just me, probably is but I would stick with smokless in my ML II and shoot the conicals out of the encore, but then I'm lazy at times and don't want to get around to cleaning things right away.

What about using a saboted conical like the 435 SSB? The twist rate of the Savage should be ideal for it. You could use around 42 grains 4198 and get, I figure, between 1500-1550 fps with CUP < 19000.
You would get all the benefits of smokeless and all the benefits of a conical. Just an idea . . .

No can do.. Conicals + smokeless specifically disallowed by Savage. My suspicion on why that's so is perhaps there is not enough of gas sealformed with conical bullets, and what you'll get is a bunch of misfires.

The 435 SSB isasaboted bullet which isa high sectional densityunjacketed pure lead so it behaves like a "full heavy conical". Even so, it is heavier than what Savage recommended in the manual which the best I can tell is 300 grains. When I researched getting a Savage, I thought I would test this load. It just kinda fits me better as I likeheavy lead conicals and would want to reducing operating pressures below 20,000 psi for the sake of the rifle.
But even so, I am going to recommend that you don't use it. For one thing, if you mistakenly use the powders recommended by Savage for the 300 grain bullets, the pressures would be higher than the operating design of the rifle. Better stick with the manual on all your loads.
I did not see the "saboted" part, sorry 'bout that.Yourright, I would much prefer to let the engineers atSavage determine what's safe in my rifle and what's not. I'm not a good guesser.[]

I tried to shoot conicals out of my Savage withT7 and it was kinda OK
it would work for hunting but I wasn't real happy with them. Powerbelts were a little better. Accuracy was just not there. I did take it along as back-up rifle on an elk hunt.

Its definitely better not to guess. I personally wanted a load which was toned down with less yield and less pressure than those recommended in the manual.
In any event, you could use SSBs with BP or substitutes in your Savage if you desired. Then if you like them, perhaps an inquiry at Savagemight give you load recommendation with smokeless. Since the manual doesn't prohibit the SSBs, I for one would be interested in knowing whether they would authorized use of the SSBs with smokeless and with what charges.
