Second time out, Cabela's Hawken GM 1:28 barrel, 11 shots.
All shots 90 gr Pyro Select, 240 XTP, Crush Rib, swabbed
First two 1,2 wild, fouling the barrel I suppose.(hope?)
Group 3,4,5 1.06" @50 open sights
Group 6,7,8 .875"
" />
Group 1,2,3 from @ 100 yds, open sights
Group size 2.125"
" />
While 3 shot groups don't mean a lot, I'm optimistic.
That is some outstanding shooting. Next time try fowling the barrel before you shoot. Just load a squib load and fire that off. I dump 30-40 grains of powder then push a wad on that and fire it. Then load. After the first shot, then swab the barrel if that is what you do.
Again, outstanding shooting. My 1:28 likes the 200 gr XTP with 110 grains of Triple Se7en 2f also. As well as a number of other loads. Some of those groups with open sights are as good as others accomplish with scopes. You must have good shooting form....

Gee Whiz! that really looks good, nothing to complain about there.
I am asuming that the 240 you are shooting is a 44 cal... If you get a chance try some 45 cal bullets. I know the 44's have a better BC, but for me I have always had better luck shooting 45's, but then again I am arcaic...
I really think when you get to the 200 grain XTP's you have will really surprise you... They are just a fun bullet to shoot... Another bullet I would suggest if you get a chance is the 250 grain .452 Speer Gold dot - it is a great bullet out to 150/175 and with that deep hollow point - the expansion is awesome... again it is a bonded bullet...
Sorry to get you off track on my suggestions but I do have an interest in your gun - somewhat....

Cayugad - I do need to try that. I realized last night that shots 1 and 2 were very similar to shots 1 and 2 of last week end, so I believe the fouling is needed. I wish there was a product with which we could swab the bore that would have the same result and be non-corrosive, so the gun could be left loaded though "fouled", during hunting season.

Dunno. I only put bags under the barrel this time letting the stock lay in the elbow crease of my bent left arm. I thought I was getting smaked in the cheek last time by having to get my face down so low on the stock. Did seem to reduce the slap. I'd attribute the results to good trigger break on this gun. The fiber optic sights are helpful.
Sabotloader - the 240's are the 44 cal. .430's. I had a whole box and the CR sabots to boot. Next weekend I hope to try the .40 200's. The crows are out there now harrassing the heck out of a Great Horned Owl. Some of them may have to perrish!

Essentially I do leave me barrel somewhat fouled all year. At the beginning of the hunting season I will check it (shoot it a target) swab the barrel with windex and hunt and shoot with it that way all season. It will not get a strip down cleaning until the end.... UNLESS I get caught in some real nasty weather. That is also why I damp patch the barrel after every shot because that will be the condition my barrel will be when I shoot shoot it. I am not so sure you can do this shooting Pyro, but shooting T7 it is not a problem. T7 really is a smokeless with charcoal added for smoke. It is corrosive but not near as corrosive as Pyro or real BP. During the field season, there is also a VERY light coat of oil in the barrel - that is a no-no also but it does not affect my accuracy and it does protect the barrel - actually it is not oil it is Slip 2000.

I wanna help.... although we start Turkey season the 15th....

You can use a ML shotgun for Turkey... not sure a rifled barrel would work that well though - might throw the shot all over the place - can not imagine it holding a pattern... BUT - have never tried it....
