Default Tradition's Deer Hunter .50

I was wondering what kind of quality the Tradition's guns are?I was thinking of a Deer Hunter.50 for my 14 year old. They are 1-48 twist and scopeable.Or their tracker .50 but it's a 1-28 twist so not sure about home rolled conicals.I don't wish to own anything I can't make my own ammo for.Spanish made I think......all feedback welcome.......Harold

I own a traditions kentucky flintlock and its an excellent shooter and i actually just made a post about their warranty. My frizzen spring screw stripped and i thought the lockplate hole did too so i sent it in for warranty coverage and they inspected it, repaired the damaged screw and sent me back the fixed lock with a paper and everything that was done. The lockplate threads were fine and just the little screw had to be replaced.

What kind of $$$ are you looking to spend?

The Tradition's deer hunter would be a good rifle for your 14 year old. Instead of conicals, cast some simple .490 roundball and have them shoot them. At the same time you can try conicals out of it. Many of the 1-48 shoot conicals well. Are these REAL conicals your casting?

Even the faster twist might shoot conicals. I shoot REAL out of my CVA Staghorn with good results. The trouble is you never know what a rifle will like until you start trying different loads out of them.

I used a Traditions Deerhunter with the oxtigon barrel for over 20 years. Never had a problen untill last season. The nipple theards in the ballister became worn out. Mind you that over the last 20 years I couldn't tell you have many deer I have harvested with that gun. Lost count may years ago. For my son I got him the Traditions Pursuit LT. Real nice break open style for not much expence plus he is left handed so was one of a few options since did not want to break the bank for his first gun. Put a Weaver 4x fixed scope on his and he harvested a nice doe at 100 yards this last year. I liked his gun so much that I went out and bought one for myself for my Deerhunter was out of commission. First shot nice average size 4x4 buck. We use a Lee mold and pour all of our bullets. I believe they are 260 grain conicals. We get consistand 2.5-3 inch groups at 100 yards with them, using 85 grains of pyrodex. I have a Bushnell 4x scope on mine. I am sold on the LT. I know that there are muzzel loaders out their for 2 or 3 time the cost but I don't believe that the deer have checked into that.

I have one that I got for my son when he was 14.The first deer he shot at with it was a doe at 70 yrds and he nailed a perfect shot. He's 19 now and still using the little Traditions Deerhunter 50 cal.! It's loaded with 90 grns 3F and Maxi-hunter conical, open sights.

Don't know about all of 'em, but this one has sure been worth the money.
