Default Lock disassembly

I disassembled the lock for my CVA sidelock tonight. I'd like to polish the parts for improved lock speed. All parts came apart easily wth the exception of the hammer. The hammer is stuck on the tumbler axle. Does anyone know of a trick for separating the hammer from the axle. The tumbler screw came out easily. I've not had it fully disassembled before or seen one exposed. It appears the square hole through the hammer is slip fit over the axle, and I presume the axle passes through a hole through the lockplate with only the hammer and tumbler screw holding it in place? I can not see behind the tumbler in pictures Cayugad was nice enough to send me from the B.E Spencer book. I supported the lockplate over wood blocks and tapped on the axle with a punch but for obvious reasons am hesitant to exert much force. Any ideas?

i always did the wood blocks like you and smack it with some muscle. The lock on my traditions .36 is tight and needs some arm muscle with a small bolt and hammer. You could always give it a shot of oil and let it soak up and then try it again.

Did you mean the hammer is tight on the axle? Sounds like it based on your description of using a bolt to knock it loose. I did just find some pictures of CVA tumblers and hammers on Ebay and it looks like my assumptions are ok. Unless someone chimes in otherwise, guess I'll give it more "muscle" tomorrow night. I did spray some PB Blaster on the junction tonight. Thanks.

Yes i meant the hammer is tight on the axle. Just give it a good blow and it will pop out. Once its off you can file off any burrs that u find. Do it on a hard solid surface, its hard to get it off on a carpet floor.

Might try just putting it in the freezer for a while. The parts will contract from the cold and possiably just slip apart.

Yeoman,
I had trouble getting the hammer off the longs lock and it did come off. Inside the hammer square hole it looked to me like a ridge in the center all the way around. I beleive this to be slightly tapered so over time you still can tighten it up.
IMHO do not srtrike the hammer but soak it and lightly tap it later w/ a HARD plastic hammer.

Be careful when you tighten it up as I just stripped the outer screwcover shaft forthe hammer. Thataxle is very hard steel. I'm pi$$ed off and will have to find a new one. It still has a few threads left but not right.....
I would suggest kroll which is like liquid wrench and very good stuff.
Man handleas the last resort....

Thanks SHills, Allyooper, Mauser and Gander,

Once convinced there was nothing retaining the axle other than the hammer on the square post, I gave it good rap and it popped out. I buffed the individual parts, though I was surprised at the smoothness and relative cleanliness of those parts. It was a bit more interesting getting things back together. Now, just waiting for the weekend and the wind to quit howling for a test run!
