Default old stuff..

I just found afew things in a drawer in my shop I hadn't seen in a while. One was the manual which I got with my CVA mountain rifle 30+ years ago. The manual only refers to 45 and 50 cal rifles. It lists the max recomended charge at 90 grains. But in the manual is CVA's powder measure which goes to 120 grains. Wonder why?

Also found miscellaneous ML stuff I picked up at an auction; a plastic see thru "scope"/peep, a couple of speed loaders with old maxiballs in them and a box+ of Speer .457 roundballs. From my searches it looks like the .457's are for a 44 cal BP pistol. Can anyone use these pistol roundballs? If so, Bmail me.

Sabotloader-

Maybe "manual" was the wrong term. It's a general little CVA book (4"x5") about muzzleloading covering flintlocks as well as percussion rifles. Brown cover with gold writing. I don't have it in front of me now but I looked for anyting about twist and there was no reference. It does speak exclusively about patched roundballs. Suggest 1:66?

i dont think a .457 ball would even cut down to size. i used .451 and .454 in my 44 i had and the 454's were heck to get down the cylinder.

I am really leaning to the 1/66 for a 30 year old gun, which does make it difficult to shoot any thing but really short projectiles... Might explain some of your findings....

Sabotloader- I know what you're saying. What mistifies me is how this gun seems to shoot the Sabertooth quite well, yet when I take the skirt off and stand it beside the .452 Hornady 250, the 270 Saber is the same height and a hair wider (2 sabot pedals thickness wider). That much difference in results?

Even in a 30yo gun a Hawken is usually 1:48 and they shoot a roundball fine.

I use .457" balls in my Ruger Old Army. That is the correct diameter for that gun. In addition, I use them for plinking loads in the .45/70 with 8 grains of Unique......

Elequello - bmail me an address and I'll mail you the roundballs. I'd like to see them in the hands of someone who can use them.
