What kind of gun are you shooting cataway? You might get lucky with being able to shoot a sabot out of a 1:48 twist. But i'd check into a conical bullet with that twist.

Some 1:48 shoot sabot loads very nice sometimes. The question is what sabot will do the best in the rifle. Not all rifles are alike. Some just will not shoot conicals and others will. All you can try some different ones and see what happens.

cataway

I shoot 300 grain Speers in an HPH-24 sabot just fine from all of my 1/48 barrels. Both Renegades, a Lyman and a couple of Hawkens... i have not had much luck with lighter and shorter bullets but the 300 Hornady or Speers shoot right where i am pointing... 80 grains of T7-3f in the 50's and 90 in the 54's

Same for me, I am shooting 300g Hornady XTP and Speer Gold Dot with Harvester Crush Rib sabot using 100g of Goex BP in a TC Hawken FL. If you do the math a 1:48 twist will stabilize a .78 inch bullet, so you have to shoot something short. The Speers are exactly 3/4 of an inch. The Hornady is just a bit longer. I am only shooting, sighting in at 50 yards with open sights. I like the killing power of the Speer and the Hornady, much much better than a PRB. I know, I know it is shot placement, but in PA where I hunt with a FL on drives, there are no broadside shots at standing deer, using this hunting method. All a running, all at close range ( < 50 yards in my case).
The Speers penetrate well.

We all know that different guns will like different loads and bullets ,my Hawken [the i-48] will shoot 200&230 gr XTP 451 in the standerd black sabot uder 2.5 inches all day long but it just dont like a heavy bullet and it needs at least 110gr RS to shoot them accurate. You just have to find out what yours likes. Lee

as everyone said a 1:48 is a general twist..might shoot anything accurate..might not. they are supposed to like conicals. my 1:48 wont shoot ANYTHING but patch and ball accurately. ive tried like 5 diffrent conicals and get the same results..looks like im shootin buckshot by the time im done shootin them! never tried sabots though..1:48 twist may shoot them though..i know a couple guys that shoot sabots in them.

my 1-48 twist doesnt like sabots. i talked to a custom flint lock maker shooter at one of the shows and he shoots them all day long in his guns . all gun are different but he suggested using all lead type bullets. he used a lee mould and made his own. i guess like those cheap shot bullets. im thinking heavier bullets might be better. im gonna shoot a few and see if it works in mine but i dont think im will ever give up my 370 maxi balls. it just knocks deer over.

He is the TC Black Powder shooting manual:

http://www.tcarms.com/assets/manuals/current/Shooting_TC_BlkPwdr_Guns_Man.pdf

They show several sabots in there such as Hornady XTP. Chap Gleason Va
