Default Is this much funk on a new barrell normal?

This is the first patch sent down a brand new barrel on my brand new gun (CVA Bobcat) before firing it:

thats normal. Thats just grease they put in the barrel to stop it from rusting while its in the package. Make sure you use a bore brush and scrub it and then use your patches.

All new rifles are packed with a nasty black grease. That all must be removed before you shoot the rifle for the first time. Give it a good HOT water and some dish soap bath, then run some solvent patches down it and finally some dry patches. It takes a little work but it will come clean.

Do not shoot it like that you will have a mess in the breech of that rifle like you do not want to know. That black grease will grab powder and when you ignite it, you will really know what a mess is when you clean the rifle. Also it might not fire real good.

So yes, that is normal. In fact I would be surprised if it was not there.

Oh the differences to learn between centerfires and muzzleloaders... I was really scared for a few minutes.

At least yours came out with the black grease only. I bought a 54 Bobcat a few years ago. Out of the box I couldn't get a patch to go down the bore. When I pulled it back out it was brown. I took a flashlight and shined it into the muzzle and saw so much rust it looked like hair growing in there, I couldn't even see the bottom(breach) of the barrel. The company sent me a new barrel and it was much better, just the black packing grease in that one.

Good luck with your new toy, those Bobcats are a lot of fun.

All the first patches in guns are that dirty. It must be the packaging oil.

metaldonnieg

Heres another result of wiping a new barrel.

I ran a solvent soaked patch through the barrel and let it set overnight
lying flat as shown above. Those were the first patches I pulled the next
day. Then Igave it a few strokes witha brass brush and flushed it out
with hot water. From there Idry patched it out and lubed it.

You'll enjoy your Bobcat
