Default BP Pistols

Anyone into Black Powder pistols. I'm looking at a Traditions .50 cal Trapper. What's the word on this gun??? Is Traditions a quality company???

http://www.outdoorsuperstore.com/pro...TRAPPER+PISTOL

Is is better to go with a Percussion than a Flintlock with a Pistol???

Tradition's make good firearms. As for whether a rock lock or cap lock, that depends on how experienced you are with rock locks. I think you would be able to master either of them just fine.

What is your purpose you want the gun for?
Hunting, target, plinking?
Some states do not recognize BP handguns for hunting because many do not generate what might be considered high enuff energy. Some states only allow long guns for BP for this reason.
You might want to consider a Ruger Old Army. Probably one of the strongest and most accurate BP handguns on the market. I have heard of the Ruger being used for deer hunting to around 50 yards. T/C used to make a gun called the Patriot. They don't make them anymore, but these single shot BP guns were supposed to be top of the line and very accurate. I had bought one three years ago to deer hunt with, after doing some research on the energy levels at 30 and 40 yards and talkingto some Game Wardens I found thatmy state does not recognize BP handguns as legal for deer.I see them on occasion on Gun Broker though.

Good luck
Hank

traditions trapper i hear is a dangerous gun. Dangerous if you're the target! Another traditions pistol that i hear that have great performance on paper target is the kentucky pistol by traditions. The trapper has adjustable sights VS the kentuckys fixed sights so if it were me and i wanted a single shot pistol, the trapper is the way i would go. I wouldnt look for a tc patriot, they no longer produce replacement parts for them. You may also want to try www.dixiegunworks.com and go to the search engine and type in traditions trapper, dixie has great prices and probably could save you a few bucks.

For the money I think I'd go for the Lyman pistol:

But I'd really like to give one of these a try some day:

Both can be gotten at http://www.possibleshop.com/

Thanks for the input guys!

If I were to get a Traditions Trapper Kit, are these hard to put together. I think it would be pretty cool to take the time and build one, rewarding! I believe it is just assembling the gun, nothing to major???

no they are not hard to put together. im going to order the traditions kentucky pistol flintlock this summer. If you want a pistol that suits your taste in color and shine, i'd go with the kit. The factory finishes arnt exactly the best. Its a shame to have a beautiful piece of wood and have a really ugly color of stain that hides the grain.

Edited and put up a pic of what i mean by factory finished hiding the wood grain. This is a pic after i redid the stock, i could hardly see all the beauty of the wood with the factory finish. I also redid a cva colonial pistol and that sucker just jumped out at you after it was done. So if you want to get a great finish and a color that you like, The kit is what you'd want.
