Default 209 Conversion Kit

I just changed my Remington 700ML over to primers today with the cabela's conversion kit. I didn't have any problems that I know of. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which primer works the best with the Remington. I'm going to try working up a loadusing the 300 grain Speer Gold Dots andMMP HPH-24 sabots in front of 100 grains of FF Triple Seven. I've never used primers before and could use some advice. Thanks for and help. Tom

I use the old Remington 209-4 - a shotgun primer for 410 shot guns. I also am not a fan of all these new ML primers because they cost so much money... You want to use the coolest primer you can and I belive that is a Winchester 209A... at a normal price... I have not tried any of the newML primers, because of cost...

PM Cayugad he knows which one it is he has used a lot of them...

Thanks for the advice on the Winchester 209A Sabotloader. I hope to pick up the primers tomorrow and hit the range on Friday. I'll let you know how this load youyou helped me with works out.

One thing, do not get to concerned if you shoot the primer right out of the battery cup the primer is in or if the the whole assembly comes out of the nipple...

Each time you shoot check you bolt - if the shot has blown the bolt back to the fire position - that could indicate a problem especially if it is a consistent thing....

You did install the new spring... correct?

Well........ not exactly. Thedirections said to save the spring that came with the kit as a spare, so I put the old one back in. I can change it if thats the best thing to do.

I really might be... Is your Rem a 24" or a 26" barrel. The original spring in the 24" Rem were really kinda weak - I think they were 24# the spring you got with the kit will be a 26" spring - they make springs all the way up to 32# - I think I have 28# springs in mine....

If you were to compare the two prings relaxed I think you would find the new spring an inch or so longer and stiffer. You will no early on if when you shoot and you end up with the inner bolt pushed back to the cock position. If it does that constantly - you should probably switch springs.

Again if your Rem is one ofthe new ones (26" barrel) you just might be OK.

I called the guy in Canada that makes the kit once with that symptom and he suggested I get a new spring. That is when I ordered the 28# springs from Brownells.

I found the Winchester 209W primer to work the best in my 700's(which included remingtons, CCI's and 209A's)

Side note: the Fed 209A is a tad warmer than theWin 209W.

I have found thatI get better accuracy with a variety of loadswith the Winchester 777 primers(1st choice) or the Remington muzzleloader primers(2nd choice)than I dowith the standard shotgun 209's.I also have the Cabela's 209 conversion and like it a lot better than the Remington 209 conversion, although I have noticed more carbon buildup in the bolt if I shoot ita lot.It has never caused a misfire, however. It is much easier to remove the fired primers with the Cabela's kit.Do you have one of the green plasticRemington bolt disassembly tools? You can take the bolt apart in about 15 seconds without a coin or vise!

Thanks for all the advise. I did have one of the green tools at one time a few years ago, but it has since been misplaced. I'll have to pick up another one.Just curious what kind of groups are you guys getting with yours. I'm hoping for 3 in. groups at 100 yds. If I can get that I'll keep it for my Son to shoot during our Blackpowder season here in Mo. If not I'll sellorswap it out for one of the newer rifles. Tom
