Default Finally got one

Ive been having one of the worst seasons Ive ever had.Deer numbers were kinda low to begin with thanks to the DNRs recent doe killing campaign, shotgun season just got over and the deer seem to have vanished. On top of that the weathers been unreal, warm, no snow, and the deer are scattered everywhere, with the nice weather hunting pressures been way higher than normal. It been a week since Ive seen a deer anyplace I have permission to hunt and I havent had one in range since season opened.

Last night I decided to just drive around and see if there was anything I have been missing.I went out to a farm I have permission to hunt, its actually two farms that are connected with one other field that borders them I cant get into.I pulled into the grove on the far end of the one property, its the best spot to look everything over with binoculars. In the field where I cant hunt I seen two does headed down the fenceline, they soon jumped the fence into the property I have permission for and headed straight away from me.I looked behind them and more deer were coming out in the same area.I decided to try getting ahead of them.I went back around the section and parked.

After a half mile walk back in I hit pasture and had to crawl the last 100 yrds to stay out of sight. Finally I got back to where the two properties come together and found a tree with some bushes in the fenceline to get behind. The deer were feeding about 200 yrds away and the crawling took longer then i thought it would, i was losing light fast.I put the scope on the biggest deer and considered a shot, then decided since I hadnt tried my gun at this range there was no sense in it, I didnt feel comfortable taking that long of shot.I waited, after about 15 minutes two deer started my way.At about 150 yrds I could tell there was one buck and a big doe in the front.Again I didnt feel comfortable with the shot, they were both broadside and the buck was a decent 8 pointer but I couldnt get a good rest at that angle and there was no place else to try to shoot from in the pasture.A few more minutes ticked by and legal shooting hours were almost over. Finally the doe turned and angled closer to me with the buck coing right behind her. They stopped about 110 yrds out and turned to look back giving me a good broadside shot, they started feeding again and i put the crosshairs on the bucks shoulder. This close I could see he had a nice 8 point rack but was a young deer, small bodied and a lotta potential for next year.I moved to the doe and finally got to try my new gun out in the field.I shot, she ran off about 40 yrds and fell, in the confusion that followed the rest of the deer ran up to her and I actually thought she got back up so I had to reload and wait till the rest of the deer wandered off to go make sure, she was down right where i seen her drop, the 240 grain shockwave had done its job, right behind her shoulder where Id aimed. Finally my bad luck has come to an end this year and the freezer wont stay empty

Congratulations on the doe kill. Better yet, prepare for your reward. Passing on that young 8 pointer will come back to you in spades. It may not even be that buck but there is a good one headed your way. Be ready.
