Default scheutzen powder update..

went and shot my new scheutzen powder today. conditions werent great...light wind..45ish degrees..cloudy and damp out. but tomarrows my last day off and its rain so figured i better shoot.

loaded my 90grs of 3fg Scheutzen powder, .015 prelubed patch and.490 hornady ball. KAPOW...holycow. definently more power than Goex. ive shot a couple pounds of Goex and its TAME compared to this stuff. seemed like it light and exploded quicker/more violently and it was louder and more recoil. ive never had a problem with recoil with PRBs..but my gun definently jumped ALOT more than it ever did. i wanted to take some Goex and shoot it side by side but forgot. but i can notice the power. wish i had a chronograph..definently picked up SOME speed..

i zeroed the gun at 15yds like always...just easier for me to zero it there. then went to 25. i was shooting about 2 inches high at 25! i lowered the sights to get it on at 25. my shooting generally at 25 or so and usually shoots pretty good at 25-50 or so before falling..shot a 5 shot clover leaf at 25yds. nothing impressive but it was in the bull and i was running out of daylight.

i shot about 20 rounds at the range. only cleaned once and didnt HAVE to. my flint was getting dull so i whipped it off to get a few more shots and ran it down the bore. shooting PRB i really NEVER have to clean..and it doesnt effect accuracy. clean barrel, dirtybarrel all shoots the same for me. i guess the patches clean the barrel every shot basically. i ran a patch down it after shooting and it wasnt bad. 20rds of goex and i would had a nasty cruddy patch...but im pretty happy with the Scheutzen powder. more powerful and cleaner....whats not to like???

thanx for the info guys...my findings were exzactly as you guys said it would...one day when im not so pressed for time ill do more shooting...but the season starts the 26th so getting her zeroed and shootin good was enough for me today...

It sounds like you had a great experience and a good shooting rifle. Good luck with the rifle.

of the three, Schuetzen and Swiss or KIK, KIK is a little more mild then the other two. Swiss is a real nice clean burning strong powder. I like it a lot. Especially in my inline rifles. I get good reaction from it.

I was thinking the same thing. I can see some great advantages to the powder for cartridges too.

I am going to have to try KIK or Scheutzen when I order some powder.
I am really glad you like it. Have a Merry Christmas!

cayugad..you know my guns a shooter..your the one that got me this far! owe 90% of what i know about makin smoke to you. you remember the 45yd groundhog kill dontcha?? i THINK i got pics on hard film...the camera is in my truck...but that was the summer i got a digi cam right after that and havent touched the hard film camera..i need to burn that film up...hopefully with my first flinter deer this season!! im pumped.

definently like the scheutzen powder. black powder is black powder...i wouldnt special order Scheutzen over Goex. goex shoots equally well for me...and shooting PRBs i never gotta clean with Goex..and the increase in power doesnt make much diffrence...but if its readily available or you already have to order powder id give it a shot. but i noticed fouling wasnt as thick as Goex and noticed the power increase..im pretty sure i paid 16-18$ a pound of Goex..ill definently buy Scheutzen so long as i can get it...

Merry Christmas to all...im heading to my buddys camp Christmas night or the next day till friday for our late flintlock season! im excited. flintlock and grouse hunting...definently going to be a good trip! hopefully i can get atleast a doe...im looking for my first flintlock kill. had a few mishaps in previous years...like the picture perfect shot i had at a doe one year..POW!! wtf...why cant we find blood? whys there a hole in a tree the deer was 2 foot away from?? WTF! why are my rear sights hanging off the rifle!??!? yep...one of the screws backed out and the other loosened!! loc tighted them bad boys in after that! i shoulda known better...another time i had 3 does come through..5yds away..cracked the hammer and set the trigger and they trotted off..20yds away..moved the shooting sticks..went to settle the stock on my shoulder...KAPOW!!!!! scared the chit outa me AND the deer. no doubt i woulda drilled that one...but i had gloves on and it caught the hair trigger! the recoil from the maxi ball knocked the crap outa me withthe stock not even on my shoulder!

i think the gun may be cursed...but ive killed 2 groundhogs with it..one at 45yds!! i think thats pretty danged good shootin with an open sighted flinter...im no expert but im happy with that kill...im ready to break the deer curse!
