Default T/C Scout Hammer flies back when fired.

I have a Thompson Scout puchased 2nd hand. I would Like to know if it's normal for the hammer to recoil to thegrip causing great pain to thumb & getting cap srapnal in cheek. (saftey glasses are a must )I think the nipple might be cause.

welcome to the forum. While I do not have a Scout, I would not believe that Thompson Center ever designed a rifle to do something like that to the shooter. As for the fix, perhaps a Scout owner can point you in the right direction. I would suspect the nipple as well because there must be a lot of back pressure to make the hammer do all of that.

What is your bullet/powder combination? My renegade will many times come back to the "safety" position (1/2 cock) after the shot, but I have never been hit by any shrapnel.

isn't there some sort of a vent on that nipple? I am wondering if it is perhaps plugged. I would not think your powder charge is all that unreasonable.

Not knowing anything about the scout, I would also suggest checking into the hammer spring. Maybe its not original and not strong enough to keep the hammer down. Also cayugad idea of a hot shot nipple may ease the problem.

I have gave the spring some thought too. It seems like it has good tension. I 've got a line on new nipple, think I'll givethat a try.

Your flashhole is enlarged. Change your nipple.
