.430 or .452 300 grain XTP
I have decided to try some 300 grain XTP's for deer. Probably will be using about 100 grains pyrodex. Which is preferable, .430 or .452? Also, which sabot for an Encore, MMP or crush rib?

Bullets - I prefer the .452's, even though the .430's have a higher BC, but to throw in the curve here insted of the XTP - look at the Speer Gold Dot ( it has a higer BC than either one of the Hornady's)- It is a bonded bullet with a core so it retains weight (can not shoot the lead out of the copper) something like a Nosler Partition.... http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1791957 http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1794250 Good luck with your choices - it is really neat to have choices... |

The .430 bullet is the regular XTP. Thereare two 300 grain .452 bullets: The XTP and the XTP-MAG. I would recommend the XTP with 100 grains of powder. The XTP-MAG may not expand properly at longer ranges.

RE: .430 or .452 300 grain XTP
the other day when getting ready to try a different rifle for deer hunting, I took out the Stainless Steel Green Mountain Barrel with open sights (not fiber optic) and loaded the 300 grain Hornady XTP with 100 grains of T-7 2f. All shooting was done off a sand bag at 50 yards. On a clean barrel it shot a little high. The first group was a little low, but with adjustment, it shot these real good. Needless to say I loaded up and went hunting with them. Where the deer cross my stand, it ranges at 47 yards so I was pretty sure I could hit one. In the past I have tried a lot of the Gold Dot Bullets by Speer. While accurate to about 70 yards, they lost it after that. I have checked my supply and discovered I have a box of the ones Sabotloader is talking about, so after deer season I will try them. Until then I will stick with the XTP's. |
RE: .430 or .452 300 grain XTP
The .452 is the better bullet and the black sabot for the .452s are tougher than the green .430 - plus less succeptible to having flyers.... a common problem with the greenies and high powder volumes.I would suggest the Crush Ribs with the .452s or the new MMP 3 Petal EZ-Load sabots as first choice.I had no luck with the MMP-HPH-24s. There are thinner, but MMP uses a polymer substancethat still makes them more difficult to load than the regular Harvesters in two MLs I tried them with.

I tried the "older ones" and they did terrible, with a .430 bullet. I think the new ones(HPH Green) might be a diffrent story.

I always used the 240 grain .430 XTP bullets in the black sabot. They work great in my guns. Then I got into the 250 grain SST. They shoot to the same point of aim in my Encore.

RE: .430 or .452 300 grain XTP
I have never gotten a .429/.430 bullet to shoot as well as the .451/.452 bullets. Always thought it had something to do with the thicker sabot. But last year, I shot some of the 200 grain Shockwaves (.400 bullet)with the blue sabot - they went into an inch at 100 yards. Maybe the .429's have hope yet . . . .
