First Deer with Smokepole - Graphic Pictures - Bullet Performance
Well fellas, I finally got a chance this evening to harvest my first deer with my new Encore. A few days ago I did quite a bit of shooting out to 150 yards using Harvester Sabots, and 240gr XTPs with 100gr of Triple 7 Pellets. I shot a 3 shot group exactly 3" high at 100 yards that you could cover with a 50 cent piece, so I was very pleased. Then I placed a 32ounce Powerade bottle full of water at 150 yards, and blew it up.
This evening I was walking for pheasants about a mile from my house and I kicked up 3 does that ran into a dugout about 1/4 mile north of my house. So I walked home, kenneled up my dog and grabbed the smokepole. I only had about 15 minutes of light left so I was walking along at a good clip trying to get to the dugout, the deer heard me coming and took off running when I was about 70 yards away. They stopped and I lasered the big doe at 156 yards. I was already sitting down and resting over my knee. I got the sights settled behind her shoulder and squeezed one off. I heard bones cracking/and a solid Thwap. She ran about 50 yards and stopped an fell over, she got up again and spun a circle and fell over again (in the meantime I am reloading just in case), then she got up one last time an fell over for good.
I went an dragged her out of the edge of my CRP field and hurried home to get my pickup/camera/etc. The bullet entered right behind her shoulder about midway up her body. It exited almost in the armpit area behind the opposite shoulder. I got 1 lung and the top half of the heart.
I don't have the pictures quite uploaded yet, but once I do they will be posted, and they will be graphic so you have all been warned.
Thanks guys for encouraging me to get started in BP and helping me out! I'm officially addicted!

that's quite a shot for your first black powder deer, congratulations... Interesting how she got up those couple times but could not run off. Must have done a lot of internal damage. Good shooting, and good eating..

Thanks for the compliments guys! Feels good to know I can kill with open sights and a muzzleloader. This is my first deer I have ever shot with open sights. Our special buck season opens up soon here, so now I am feeling 100 percent confident in my abilities! I just got done skinning the deer out and cutting out the hanging tenders/backstraps. Its going to be steaks tomorrow evening for supper now!
I was kind of disappointed that the bullet exited, I would have loved to recovered it. I did shoot a corner post in my pasture behind my house from 60 yards tonite to unload my gun. Tomorrow I am going to go dig the bullet out of it and see how it held up.
