Default Rifle bullets instead or pistol bullets in a sabot??

Just toying around ith this idea for off season shooting next spring. Has anyone ever done any shooting with a bullet typically used in say a 45-70 govt rifle. I have always used pistol bullets in a .44 or .45 caliber. The 45.70 bullet is .458 dia and weighs 300gr and up. I may not be able to find a sabot for that caliber. Anyhow, I am surmising that the rifle bullet will have a better bullistic coefficient and that the added lengthe of the bullet compared with tha of a pistol bullet would give more stability and better accuracy. Just an experiment I am thinking about this spring, but if some of you have had experinece with this and it failed miserably your advice might save me from possibly wasting my time.

MMP makes a sabot orange in color for the .458 diameter. You can order them direct through MMP. Knight also sells a MMP sabot under their name. Mid South Shooter Supply used to carry them.

I shoot two bullets .458 in diameter. One I cast of pure lead and it weighs around 415 grains. The other a Remington 405 grain FP I purchase and it too shoot excellent out of many of my rifles.

A number of people use them, they shoot quite well but are very heavy which defeats any added balistic capability
there is also a .475 that TC calls a big game but my gun did not like them.Lee

Barnes original .458 300grSpitzer soft point or 300gr Flat Nose or the 350gr X bullet in a MMP orange sabotare great combos, the Remington 405gr is also a good one to try. Hornadys SSTs are .451-.452 in both 250 and 300gr and if you want a thicker jacket buy the bonded ones.
