Default T/C Pro Hunter

I have just bought a new T/C Pro Hunter SS .50 cal. I'm fairly new to muzzle loading and would like some advice. I bought this gun to hunt in Illinois this year. I will be hunting open farm ground and some woods. What bullet/powder set up would y'all recommend as astarting point? Also, what is a realistic yardage I could expect to make a clean kill on adeer using this gun?

Any other suggestions and advice would be great.

Thanks in advance for your time.

You made a great choice with the ProHunter. Are you going to be using a scope on it? I have an original Encore and I know they say that shooting 200 yards is not a problem. (I personally wouldn't shoot this far until I spent a lot of time at the range at this yardage.)
If you think you'll be shooting over 125 yards I'd go with 150 grains of either Triple 7 or Pyrodex. I shoot only 100 grains but my shots rarely reach out to 100 yards. The Triple 7 is a little cleaner to shoot. I would get the new Triple 7 209 primers or Remington cleanbore primers. These cost a little more but they are supposed to cut down on the famous "crud ring".
As far as bullets go, you'll have to find what shoots best in it. I would try Barnes MZ Expanders in either 250 or 300 grain. I have used the cheap T/C XTP sabots and have killed 2 deer with the 240 grainers. I'll PM you some other info.

Me personally am shooting 85 grains and can lay a deer down with now problem ant 115-125 yards. Im shooting Jim Shockeys Gold and 250 grain shockwave. I to am shooting an Encore 50.Cal and feel comfortable with this setup.

For high performance loads, it is hard to beat the Pyrodex pellets behind a 250 gr. T/C Shockwave. With 200 yard magnum loads, the Pyrodex pellets produce more speed and more consistent velocities than does loose Pyrodex RS. I would load either three fifty grain pellets, or two fifties and a thirty. If you are going to load 100 grains, the loose stuff works fine. You could also try 120 gr. of loose 2F Triple 7 with this same bullet - or even 130 gr. of loose 2F Jim Shockey Gold. But the Pyrodex pellets, in my experience, are the "gold standard" if you want to push your Pro Hunter to the 200 yard performance level.

Depends on what your gun likes, mine[Omega] shoots well with Shock Waves,I don't expect to shoot over 150 yds so I use the 250gr but any time I need long range I go to the 50/40 200gr with 150 gr it will tear ragged holes with 5 shots @ 100 yds and there are people who have brought down Moose with them. Today I was in the big city, and decided to stop at the local sporting goods store for some projectiles to try out of a new rifle. While there I noticed they had a lot of Omega's both the X7 and the standard, Encores, and some Tradition's Trackers. I asked them if they ever got Pro Hunters in. He asked if I wanted to get on the list. He said there were five people a head of me, waiting to purchase one.

Are these things going off the shelf that fast?

Then I stopped at Wal Mart for some more sporting goods things and they had Omega's in a package inlcuding projectiles, patches, jags, etc. They were the Z5 so it looks like the Black Diamond XR and standard are things of the past as well...

I have a Pro T/C, took it and an original encore out to NM to hunt elk. Tried a butt-load of different loads and went back to my old deer hunting load of 2 pellets of pyro and 250 t/c sabot and keep my distance to 125yds or less, only change was adding a bonded sabot 250gr. I chose to stick with this as I can group the hell out of a target with this combo.

Unfort, I never saw a shooter until the last day and could only get w/in 238 yds of the guy. Bad year there supposedly due to summer rains, had the elk spread out everywhere.
