Default Light Load for an 8 Yr old ???

It is almost that time again !!!!!!!!
I want to take My 8 year old Son hunting with Me this ML season.
What is the lightest load out of a TC Omega 50 cal 250 Gr SST bullet I can get. What is the lowest Pyrodex load I can use without fear of any problems. Any thoughts welcome and any first hand light loads welcome. This will be a short range thing say 75 yds max. Thanks !!

What does the rifle like with that particular round ? Can your son even reach the trgger on that thing ? My grandson is 9 and can't fire my rifle because he can't shoulder it properly and still reach the trigger .

2 years ago I set up my CVA optima for my g/f to shoot. I used a 200 grain shockwave and 80 grains of pyro. It didn't kick much and it shot great out to 70 yrds. (70 was the limit because she was a brand new hunter). I also made some shooting sticks and that made it a ton easier for her because of the weight of the gun.

The omega is long for me, and I'm 5'4". Perhaps get a cheap Omega stock off of Ebay or something and have it cut down for your son's use?

Last year I bought a used Black Diamond. Put adecent 3x9 scope to start and then took about 3 1/2 inches off the barrel and about 2 1/2 inches off the stock. Then put three ozs of lead in the stock. Put a heavy recoil pad on it and took it to the range. While it is heavy, it balances perfectly in the wrist. An adult can easily shoot it one handed.

We played around with loads and settled on 75 grains of 777 under a 300 grain hornady XTP. I could probably have found a lighter load, but my son handles it well. He killeda nice doe at about 80 yards with it.

I was concerned that the short barrel might hurt accuracy. But, no problems. It shoots a nice 2 inch group at 100 yards which is more than good enuff for him. It is loud, makes lots of fire and smoke, but that just makes it even better.

Good luck,
Hank

That's onetall 8 year-old?

I suggest an 180 gr 45/50 XTP with the blackHarvester Crush Ribsabot and 45 gr. of 777 for 75 yards.

If it were 50 yard shots instead, the .177 roundball and patch produces the least recoil... again about 40 gr. powder. Accuracy/rainbow trajectoryproblems exist with the roundball in most fast twists after approximently 50 yards.
