Just got back from the range shooting 777 FFG and 777 50 grain pellets. I was pushing a Buffalo 375 grain sabot in a MMP 3-petal. I thought I wanted to try the pellets for ease of hunting. I tried shooting two 50 grain pellets to get my "100" grain equivelent. The "100" grain equivelent brought the bullet in 4" low at 100 yds from my previous sight in using 90 grains of 777 FFG. Just to check to make sure I was seeing this I loaded up the 90 grain load and shot dead on. The ignition of the pellets seemed to vary from shot to shot. I have a half box of the pellets that may never see the gun as I believe powder 777 is the only way to go. Just my two cents on how the "100 grain equivelent" does not come close to matching the 90 grain load.
The 777 pellets were developed to match Pyrodex pellets speed& energy for safety reasons. My best guess would indicate there is approximently 42 grains in ever 50 grain 777 pellet. So 84 "approximate" grains could get you 4" lower on your target than your old load of 100 grains.

Yep, I've always heard that 100 gr. of pellets was not the same as 100 gr. loose.

From what you just said that would make a fifty and a thirty grain pellet pretty light in the seat of the pants! Someone told me that the old timers like Jerimiah Johnson used one grain of black powder for each each digit of caliber. Don't know if I said that right. But what I mean is a .50 Caliber would take 50 grains of black powder. It was an Arkie that told me that and you can't always rely on what them fellers say. What is the difference between ffg and fffg? I have noticed that Triple Se7en advertises some velocities on their bottles of powder. And that the velocities for the fffg are flatter then the ffg. From what you have said is that I am just tickleing what I am shooting at with two 50 grain pellets. Now you got me wondering whether I should go strictly to the powdered stuff.
The powder definately has more consistent ignition. I shoot the ffg in my Knight Bighorn. The fffg powder is finer and ignites with a little more punch. More surface area to burn. Most stores that I can buy powder at only carry the ffg. Based on that I want something that I can get easily if needed. The only thing for sure is that the pellets don't add up to the powder equivelent.
