It is a VERY HARD RING of residue that forms right about where the bullet sits;some get it so bad you have to do a thorough cleaning to get the bullet seated on the powder.I get it that bad in both my inlines, to be fair there are some people who say they don't have the problem or that they can control it by using the right prime I went to musket caps and still got it, I also tried # 11 caps but all they did with it was miss fire and hang fire.
A lot of people fined themselves right in the middle where it is usable but requires wiping every shot.
I went to APP-FF slower ,a lot more stable very clean I wipe every 4 or 5 shots out of habit but have shot 10 with out loosing accuracy; if you want the same velicity you can get it by adding more powder if you do decied to use 777 remember that it is so fast that a 110 gr shows a very short sharp peak very near the breach thats higher than 150gr of Pyrodex RS or APP -FF so beware overloading. The "crud ring" is what we used to cal l"burn-on at the breech". You experience this as well when using large charges of black powder. What it is, is excessive fouling in the breech area that makes it difficult or impossible to seat the next bullet all the way down on the powder unless you swab the bore well between shots....

Keep a bore brush for swabbing - not a jag
Keep the bore clean of oils and lubes
Swab with alcoholand/or Windex every 2nd shot
Use the weakest 209 primer (Winchester Triple Se7en)
Use 777 FFF for less, softer fouling
Use 3" square or round patches

Should not be a bullet-seatingissueobeying these above unless you use three pellets (120-150 gr) or above 100 gr. loose powder.... then swab after every shot..
