Chinese made Legacy

I was at the gun shop picking up another pack of GP 385's and asking about getting a case quantity deal on them and ballets when some guy comes in asking if they still had his muzzleloader. They said they were all sold out of muzzleloaders except for a couple of Legacy muzzleloaders. Curious as I am, I asked "Legacy?" So they brought out one of them. It has a solid wood stock. Action works by cocking the bolt back, which leaves the nipple exposed. Trigger releases the bolt to set off the #11 cap.

Has very short barrel 20", carbine like. It sells for $169.00. I asked if they carried it in .54 and he said he could get one in that caliber. I didn't think to ask about its twist rate, but I think it is fast twist 1:37 or faster. I actually found my self wanting it because I'd like a fast twist .54 with a carbine barrel to shoot a 580 grain hollowpoint at 1200 fps. Would deliver 1600 ft-lbs to 100 yards with only 65 grains 3f Goex!

Has anyone ever heard of this make?And have you heard of any problems with them?

I have seen these things pop up over the past few months and I have to let you know they are nothing but a Norinco M-97 which was imported years ago and is now renamed. I bought my first one about 7 years ago for $69 and then bought a case of 6 for $250 when a gun shop was going out of business.

If you read the manual it will tell you to use a max charge of 80g BP and a patched roundball. The ones I have I believe have a shallow 1:48 twist and only shoot patched balls and light ballet or REAL bullets.

Now it is a well made rifle except the solid wood you speak of is a mystery finish on top of some sort of press board that is plenty ruged but chips off revealing the press board under. I have camo painted most of mine and given them away as presents.

I am wondering if the new batch being sold are rebarreled and restocked but I am not sure the pics look identical to the rifles I have.

I have also seen the rifle marketed with a plastic stock under again a different name.

I will post some more info on the rifles but nature calls.[8D]

I like the light little rifles they have some wierd little quirks but after you get over them you will find some stuff you really like and wonder why the big guys don't do this.

One of the biggest pluses of this rifle is with two big flat headed screws the entire trigger group comes off and can be hosed down with powder blast or any other cleaner without hurting the rest of the rifle. They also have a great trigger a couple have needed to be "cleaned up" to shoot well but the pull is light enough and it breaks right where you feel it will and that gives a shooter an edge over some guns you need to pull hard to break or it seems to do it unpredictable.

If you own a SKS the trigger is about the same as those plenty of creep and then breaks free real easy.

The factory nipples are awful but work. The bar of steel they give you to work the nipple/breach plug wrench is too small but you can fix that easy enough.

I wouldn't need to put more than 80 g in but the twist probably wouldn't do the big conical I would like to use and that size projectile may be an unsafe overload anyway. I tried to inspect the rifling to see if it was buttoned or cut. As you say, it was shallow but I couldn't see it well, the interior of the barrel was also blued. For roundball, I think I'd just get a 1:70 .54 GMBfor my hawken for about the same price. Shoot, doesn't sound like it'd work for my purposes.

You know, if that wasn'tsolid hardwood they sure do a great job of faking it. The other guy said, "what is that wood, looks like ash". The shop owner chimed, "Its walnut I think, European walnut". Honestly it did look alot like walnut sapwood but I would guess if the stock is solid, it is southeast asian in origin.

Are you talking about the Huntsman? If I could have found a Sidekick with a wood stock, I certainly would have choose it over the plastic stocked on I have. I really do wish that NEF made a .54 barrel for the Sidekick. The fact it comes in .54, was the _only_ reason I considered the Legacy at all.

I've consider putting a .54 GMB in 1:28 twist on my hawken. But I can't seem to bring myself to remove the plum-brown colored .50 barrel I blued myselffrom the rifle. It has considerable sentimental value to me so I don't really want to separate the stock from its original barrel. Been keeping an eye out for an old hawken or renegade in need of a new barrel. Maybe that's the route I will ultimately go.
