some use bore butter in bore ,others use nothing ,on rb and patch.i would like to know why you stay with say, bore butter in bore and why others dont and if you are more accurate with or without other.
My answer does not count cuase I really know very little about shooting PRB's.... would it be to increase the seal between the patch and bore to increase velocity????

i use bore butter on my patches.. it makes loading them easier. I shoot 2 or 3 lubed shots. Then 1 dry to swab out barrel and then shoot lubed untill i want a cleaner barrel. Also look at your patches if u cant find them after u fire. If they are burnt or torn, you need to lube them more. It can really mess up your accuracy
The benefit's of lube on a patch include:
[ol][*]Ease of loading.[*]Keeping fouling soft.[*]Helping to protect the patch from burning through.[*]Keeps the patch from drying out within the bore.[/ol]
Also, often (in my experience) using a wad on top of the powder with heavier hunting loadsprior to loading thePRB helps reduce fouling, increase accuracy, velocity and allow for heavier charges without blowing (buring through)the patch.
If you are going to be doing more rapid shooting (in other words, you not going to load your rifle and fire it hours later) then yes, you can load a PRB with a damp spit patch. In fact, folks that rapid shoot challenge typically also cut their patch at the barrel. They will have a strip of patch material in their mouth to dampen it then load the powder, thenplace the patch strip over the endof the muzzle, thumb start a ball then cut the patch at the muzzle, ram home, aim, fire and repeat.
However, if you are loading a damp PRB and then not firing for some time, the patch will dry out and you could end up burning through the patch ,which will cause the ball to strip the rifling and affect your accuracy.
Loading a dry patch after say the first shot will be misterable as the dry patch will catch and hang on the fouling within the bore and get exponetially worse each load.

The bore no don't lube it but patches and conicals, lube them right up.
The lube needs to be on the projectile not the bore. I know some people lube before shooting but I think it is bad for the ignition and powder in general,

Llube on a patch does (PRB loads)make the ball/patch combo slide down the bore easier. Patches of any kind, greased or not, are NOT GASKETS -in fact, they have the opposite effect. TheyDO NOT increase the seal between the bore and the ball.
Unless a ball obturates completely, filling the grooves to the bottom, there will be some gas that blows past the ball. The thicker the patch, the more pronounced this effect is. So don't expect a greased patch to give higher velocity.
However, anything that allows you to slide the ball down easierwith less force on the ramrod helps keep the ball in as pristine a condition as possible, and also lets you seat it on the powder uniformly each time,contributing to accuracy.

Speaking only for myself and my experiences, bore metal needs to be lubed to prevent rust andI use Natural Lube 1000 as a bore lube;
My patches are lubed with Natural Lube 1000 for ease of loading, to minimize fouling,to enhance shot-to-shot consistency and accuracy and integrate with the same lube that I use as a bore lube.
Other lubes can produce similar results, I've personally usedHoppe's No9 BP Plus and it's an outstanding semi-liquid that I use during low humidity, dry conditions of the year.

i too started using hoppes in cold.i think i got idea from you.but, i dont shoot much in winter.only hunt into feb here in pa.i guess what i was trying to bring out was,are we getting better accuracy with a dry bore,like without bore butter or hand cream etc or is it better with something in bore other than patch that is lubed.you folks are experts here no doubt about that. i learned a lot on here.my area is hunting the buck with muzzleloader.that is where i can help but i feel more excited about SHOOTING more from you folks on here in years.i guess, sproul is getting soft on hunting.i hate to kill a buck anymore, in fact, i was feeding 4 fawns today, 1 with white face and legs. they call them a pie-ball.so, i am losing thrill of kill BUT i am more excited on target shooting, thanks to you folks with rb than in 35 years i have been using a muzzleloader.
I don't think anyone will dislike you because of the shooting you do we all do it for our own reasons
That being said like I posted earlier but unitelligable is I think a clean bore is more accurate than one with lube smeared in it. In fact it is only a few people I have read on the ml boards that swab their bores with lube before loading.
