Default HOT WEATHER AND POI

OK no excuise but I haven't been to the range because I have always heard that your poi will change in the hot weather then what it will be during the cold days of muzzle loader deer season. Has anyone found this to be true or is it just another wives tale. And if it is true how much different will it be or could it be. Mike

The problem I find with hot weather is the barrel of your rifle gets less opportunity to cool down. A hot barrel will shoot different then a cool one most the time. The amount of deflection will vary between rifle and the kind of projectile you shoot. For instance, I find roundballs aremuch more forgiving when the weather is hot. Yet sabots on the other hand can really get finicky from time to time. Today it was in the 90's and I was shooting large conicals. The difference with them seemed very minor and I was not giving the barrel a lot of time to cool down at all.

I never let the hot weather stop me from shooting. Just take a little extra time between shots. Swab the barrel extra well. Give the barrel a few minutes to cool off. Sometimes I take two rifles on hot days and alternate between the two of them. This gives both barrels time to cool down and for any moisture from swabbing dissipate.

I am sure that hot weather alters the POI (with sabots)- but I do not let it stop me from shooting.... I just shoot - I do not adjust the scope I just take the POI and work on what kind of group I can get. Shooting slower is a must.

The only thing that really slows my shooting down in the summer is thecondition of the area that I am shooting in... We have no ranges here you find a spot in the woods set up portable stuff and shoot - My biggest worry this time of year is starting a fire on the ground from the muzzle, so I have to be pretty selective what is under the muzzle and down range a few feet.

I wouldn't think that would go over to well with your forest service friends. You guys getting rain now? We've got it everyday for almost two weeks here in CO.

Happy Hunting, Phil

Glad to hear it's raining out there - you all really needed it last time I went elk hunting in the White River N.F.!

You must have been there when it was burning. Yes, one can't complain about rain. We've been short for years. In the past week, we have received more than a years worth of rain in some locales. There have been some flash flooding, but we need the water so much, its just not right to complain about how we are getting it.

The White River N.F. sure is a pretty place.

Happy Hunting, Phil

Thanks guys I think I'll get out and shoot my Black Dimond next week I got it 5 months ago and put a new scope on it and haven't sighted it in yet. Its going to be my back up gun this season. I still have so much to do before deer season I have to fine tune my Omega, sight in the Black dimond, keep shooting my bow, fine tune my 30-06 and check my slug gun. I got so many new guns this year I have been very lucky and I just got through paying for them so their all mine. As you see I am a deer hunter and I shoot what ever gun or bow is in season. Thanks for the info. Mike

I don't worry much about POI change in hot weather as I simply choose not to shoot when it's 85 or above. Just can't enjoy shooting when sweat-blind.

Got some rain here in the last couple of days. Desperately need more.

Won't see me at any range with temps above 75 degrees or under 40 degrees.... even with a few rifles to alternate with.

Overall year-round precipitationhere inthe Detroit Metro region (three counties) for the past 2-1/2 years has been pretty darn good. Beenbelow-normal dry in the winters &above averagewet in the spring& fall -- averaging normal moisture in the summers. Winters have been above average warm-- summers below average warm - while spring & fall seem nomewhat normal in temps.

At least that's how I see it -- withoutdigging into any past history on this area.

Hope it stays that way.
