Default powder

I'm new to Black Powder so I could use some help. I bought a used knight rifle and converted it to 209 primers. I have been shooting triple se7en but heard there was a smokless powder out, american something, that required little cleaning. Is this a good powder and what is it called? Thanks in advance for any help and your opinions.

You may have heard about APP - American Pioneer Powder. I haven't used it, but I've heard that it is fairly clean burning. Jim Skockey (a TV hunter) uses it and swears by it. I'm sure you'll get more replies on here from guys who use it.
DO NOT USE SMOKLESS POWDER IN YOUR BLACK POWDER MUZZLELOADER.
"Smokeless" powder is a different kind altogether, and produces much higher pressures than your Knight rifle is designed for.

Many people use Triple Se7en and it is not as "dirty" as true black powder. But I think there may be some that are even cleaner.

Check out the thread further down on this page titled, "Shockeys Gold".

Depending on the weight of the projectile, American Pioneer Powder or Pinnacle are very clean burning powders. They tend to shoot real well with thelighter 240-300 grain projectiles. I shoot Pinnacle out of my Wolverine and my Disc with excellent results.

Another powder to consider is called Black Mag3. It too is clean burning and will work fine.

Velocities tend to be a little lower with APP. But then again you will get a crud ring with T7 and 209 primers. They both have advantages and disadvantages. Try both, your gun will probably prefer one over the other anyway.

Thanks guys. I know about real smokeless powder as I used to reload but gave all my equiptment to my friend. I was talking about app and the like powder. I went to app's web site. They have a good deal of info there about their powder. I think I'll try the compressed sticks up to 100 grains with my 240 gr bullet and sabot. Now to find a dealer near me to buy it. Thanks again.

I use APP all the time. I tried the sticks and find them not to be as consistant. Just seems to be too much space around them unlike 777 pellets. The sticks are funny in their shape.I found that sometimes they dont load right sometimes without chipping on the wide end.Im sticking with loose. Use fffg if your rifle if the manual says you can but ffg is good for all types of muzzleloaders like CVA and Traditions.

American Pioneer Powder/Shockey's Gold/GOEX Pinnacle are all made by the same outfit, and all resemblewhat was once called Clean Shot (made by the same company as well.) These arejust other substitutes for REAL black powder. None aretrue smokeless powders!!

Cleaning up after using any of these is about the same as cleaning after youuse T7...theyclean up easily usingnothing but plain water for the solvent, BUT a gun fired with ANY BP substitute now on the marketmust be cleaned the same day you shoot it, just as if you had used real BP instead of a substitute. (I proved to my own satisfaction that ClearShot that GOEX used to make was truly noncorrosive, but its' ballistics were substandard - had to use the FFFg granulation of it to get useful velocities, and it did NOT work with round balls-after theClearShot production line blew up, it did not reappear!)

There is still only one kind of easily available muzzleloader in which real smokeless powder can be safely used, and that is the Savage.
