Default Shooting 06-10-2006

Well, my son and I got away for a little while today to shoot our new Ultra Mags some more. Decided to just shoot one load. We shot the sabotloader suggested load as described in the picture below.I put the target at 50 yards and dialed in my gun at 50 yards. We could not get a group at all. Kind of thought it might be the wind at first, but then thought it shouldn't make that much difference at 50 yards. I guess it was blowing at 20 mph much of the time, but at times the wind would almost die to nothing.

At first I was not swabbing at all and when seating the bullet, I was trying to be consistant and putting some pressure on it. As we were shooting, maybe 2 shots would be pretty close and the third would be maybe 6" away. Matthew got a little frustrated and stopped shooting, but I was more determined. Finally, I did 2 things. I started windex swabbing after every shot followed by a dry patch and then I would seat the bullet so it just seated against the charge with as little compression on the charge as possible. I immediately shot the following group.

Well, compared to the others, I was pleased with this. I put a milk jug full of water out at 90 yards. I bet Matthew I could hit it with one shot. Well, I shot and it just exploaded. Matthew retrieved it to find the following. The circle that the hole goes through was directly facing me in the middle of the jug.

Was a little worried that the peep sights would catch a lot of blowback. Was pleased that there was none on the sights. They did end up beinga little high though. I think I will end up getting a lower front sight eventually. All in all, I really liked the peep sight. Will use the small aperture for targets and the larger one for hunting. This is how high it ended up being. Hopefully it is visible.

Glad to see you found a combination that started working. Water filled jugs are fun to shoot and watch them explode, nice job placing that shot.

Yours is looking good, now you need to get your son's loadup to speed. Maybe you could work a load up till its close and then let him tweek it the last little bit so he doesn't get too discouraged. Just a thought, it worked with my son.

I must admit, I'm getting a little put out with all you guys that are buying the White's. [:@]I'm still in the process of getting a Lyman GPR/GPH and you guys are on the verge of making me rethink that purchase and go for the White. I would love to get both but I also want to keep my wife (or is that life), if you know what I mean.

Good luck.

Remember not to get in to big of a hurry about groupd yet, you are just starting to break in the bore. It will take a few rounds just to get that done. While mine probably has at least a 100 through it - I am not sure that I would call it broke in yet.... The more you shoot the better it gets... For Matthew, reduces the loads to 70/80 grains for awhile let him shoot those a 50... Next time I am over, which I was hoping would be this weekend but it is not looking good, I'll will run the truck over and bring all of my shooting crap (my wifes term not mine)- that will also make a lot of difference in the groups that both of you shoot.

Got to go to work... out there in the trees and the mountains building trail and a looken fer animals...

I found pretty much the same thing shooting sabots out of any of my rifles... if you do not swab the barrel clean afterat least every other shot groups can get hard to come by. Although I admit that the White is a little more forgiving then say my Knight.

Triple Se7en is a good shooting powder. I am also not a "hard packer" of Triple Se7en. I seat the projectile on top of the charge firmly but do not push into the charge at all.

Over all for your first couple of times out, I think you're doing real well. Nothing to get discouraged about. That was a nice shot on the milk jug. You almost hit that dead center. The biggest thing is keep shooting, the rifles get better with age. I've only put about 300 rounds through mine and I can already tell the difference in the groups, the way it loads, cleans, everything. The rifle just seems to be smoothing out more.

This was testing the Bullshop Bullets compared to the No Excuse Conicals. I had looked and unfortunatly had already shot off all my 460 grain No Excuse conicals. I also shot some 495 grain BullShop Conicals. Unless I swabbed between shots the flyers was killing me. Of course this was at the end of a 40+ round day of shooting big lead. My camera batteries went dead on me but believe me, with the flyers it was nothing to be excited about. One was over 6" from the others.

Actually I had bought three boxes of the different BullShop Concials, and three boxes of the No Excuse Conicals. I have been shooting them with every kind of load combination and manner I could think up. This was done at 80 yards, and understand, my rifle is scoped.

I wanted to see what would be ordered next since I have shot almost all the conicals off, and a couple boxes of sabots. I have some of the .40 caliber XTPs coming next month along with another half case of powder so I need to order more lead to shoot or get busy casting. Thank goodness I have 20 tins of caps coming also. They raised the price of them to $4.99 a tin around here. Like I told the guy, I can buy .22 shells cheaper then these little caps.

I take it you have not had a chance to shoot the big conicals yet? I really like BullShop's 500 grain NEI 373 and the 460 grain. They seem to shoot really good. I am also going to get some of the 620 grain just for the smile factor. I doubt if I would ever hunt with anything like that, unless I end up in Northern Idaho...

I was very happy with the last group I shot. No scope, with wind and probably only about 20-25 shots through the gun. Just shooting with one bag off the front of the Suburban. I just sent payment to AK yesterday. I got some of the 400's, 460's, 500 N373's, 560's and 620's on order. Approximately how longdoes it take to receive the order? Also have some wad cards ordered from TOTW, so should be set pretty soon to try some other things.

I think Matthew's group would have been similar to mine if he would have shot after I made the change. My last four shots were the 3 shot group and then the 90 yards shot on the milk jug. I really think that is about the max of my capability as a shooter. I will back off on Matthew's powder the next time out also

Will be ordering a couple of these I think to bring the back sights down a little.

Thank again to everyone and all the info.

Nice shooting!

Ditto on the shooting. It looks like those cost effective BullShop conicals are just as accurate as the NE's our of the Ultra Mags ...

cheers,
phil
