Default To Peep or Ghost, that is the Question!?!

Hi Guys,

Have successfully moved from buying newbie ML gear to taking a look at shooting options/hunting setup for my new Ultra Mag. Thanks go out to everyone on this forum - I couldn't have done it in less than two weeks without you!

Who hunts with the Lyman 57 SME or SMET? Is this thing just too big? Easy to see your game targets in lower light situations? Same questions about the Williams rear peep ...

Now who hunts with the XS Sights ghost rear? Is it accurate enough for you? What about at the range when working up loads?

as always - thanks much!

philnie, I should receive my new Lyman 57 SME in the mail today from MidSouth. If not today, tomorrow. I think this is going to be the ticket for me. Not sure what my son will like. I hear these come with a smaller and a larger peep.

I hunted with a 30-30 with peep sights when I was a kid, so I am sure I will like them. Don't know about the ghost sights. Would like to see some though.

No guns yet???? Dang, they must have sent those things snail mail. Oh well, the wait will be worth it, trust me.

I can't see open sights worth squat but tried a WGRS on one of my UMags anyway. Took it off and sold it to another White owner. I could actually do a tad better with the factory sights. Wish someone would get one of those XSSights Weaver backups or the NECG rear peep. I think either one should work pretty well on the UMags but won't be the one acting as guinea pig - wouldn't be any point to it with my eyes.

I make my own,one of the reasons is age being close to 70 my eyes don't work like they use to. I use a 180 dia. hole in a sheild about half the dia. of a normal peep sheildand a fine wire suspended dioade in a .580 tube.It works for me since I don't like to put scopes on a Hawken I built as a copy of an original.[If you happen to be in a state that won't allow electronics you could adapt one of the new light gathering front sights for shotguns.
Mine works as long as there is light enough to see the target. Lee

I have the williams wgrs peep on my U-Mag and it works fine had to put a lower front sight on though. I feel I can get an extra 75 yards with a peep over open sights. I got old eyes too. I also use a twilght apperature for hunting. A ghost ring is basically a peep with the apperature removed.

I really think it is all a matter of preference. Some people absoluty hate peeps. I have rifles with Williams Peeps, Thompson Center Peeps, and Lyman Peeps. I find them all very accurate but they also have drawback when light gets low. The best is the Lyman Peep. I can see clearest in low light with that peep. My Thompson Center Peep when the lighting is good is the most accurate of all my peeps.

I seriously considered a Lyman 57SMET for the Ultra Mag but after going with removable mounts on a Nikon Pro Staff I see no need for it. The fiber optic sights are fine out to 100 yards for me, and that's about as far as I care to shoot with open sights. Also where I hunt that's about as far as I ever would have to shoot.

Many years ago, we had a refrigerator cardboard box we set up in a field. With a Thompson Center Peep I was able to shoot out to 150 yards once I learned the drop of the ball, off a bench rest. We taped a white Paper Plate to the carton and it stuck out like a sore thumb. So peeps are a good thing for taking longer shots I guess.

I have the Williams WGRS on my Bighorn and really like it. The peep helps me to shoot further distances. I have the .093 aperture, and also the ghost ring aperture. I looked at the XS ghost rings before I bought the williams sight, but I found the williams was cheaper and had the option of a ghost ring as well as traditional peep. The XS ghost does not have the same level of adjustability either if you look at its design. I uses screw up and down to adjust elevation and that means you may end up needing something in the middle of a revolution. Just a thought. Have not had any issues with the peep other than not really understanding how to use a peep at first. I kept trying to focus on the back and front sights like an open sight. With a peep you focus on the front sight and target and your eye will center up the rear. After I figured that you my accuracy got a much better.
