Default White's S91 (-II) vs Ultra Mag ...

Hi Guys,

Is it me or does the S91 and successor "-II" MLs look a bit like the old fashioned Springfield 1903s with that hammer assembly sticking straight out the back of the barrel?

Who has either S91 flavor and how do you like them? Any comparisons/contrasts to the Ultra Mag?

thanks and cheers,
phil

I was always going to get a Super 91 until the Ultra Mags came along. I always liked the looks of the Super 91 and from all my reading on them, they are without a doubt a great rifle... Although I am very happy with my Ultra Mag and would not part with it.

See "Pics of your Rifle and Gear". I've got a Super91 in .410 that was dressed up by Bob Bowers.. very nice rifle. And a 98 Elite which has a very similar action (straight tapered barrel instead of contoured). You couldn't pry the 98 away from me but I think neither rifle really has anything on the Ultra Mags. If anything, the Ultra Mags are easier to clean.

Edit: they do have the advantage of being easier to scope so far as base placement and thus ring/scope positioning. The S91-II might be a bit lighter as well. (Mine is not a II, it has the barrel underrib).

Got them! Thanks again Steve. They are too tight for my rifle as well but I'll run them through my sizer and they should be fine.

Might want to let Dave at NEknow what's going on with those as his .410 sizer maybe be worn enough to make a difference.

I have both styles of White, the main differences are the length of pull of the stock, the length of the action and the way the actions are cocked. The S91/II have a longer pull than the Ultra Mags, the action is about 2" longer on the S91 and the action is cocked by pulling a knob on the back where the Ultra Mag has a lever on the side of the action.

Each has its own appeal. My first White was a G-Series Whitetail (predisesor to the Ultra Mag) so I am partial to that style. It is shorter and quicker to point. The S91 being a longer gun points a bit slower but is more stable feeling.

As far as shooting them, the barrels are of good quality and they shoot very well. I like the safety of the S91 better than the Ultra Mag but I like the side cocking lever of Ultra Mag.

I guess I guy should handle each and decide. Either way they are both good guns.
