Default QT Poylymer Tip legal in Washington? - Good Choice?

I am looking at the Precision Rifle page and the ULTIMATE 1 QT Polymer Tip Spitzer 450 gr - BC .323 This bullet appears to post some pretty impressive numbers as far as ballistics go. Is this all lead poylmer Tipped bullet legal in Washington? Secondly what are the drawbacks of going with this type bullet versus something like the 460 no excuses? I am currently in the process of looking for a good load for elk. It seems like the PR ballistics would allow a 200 yd shot and still have 1464 ft lbs of energy and only drop 9". To me this seems like a good round to shoot. Being new to the muzzleloading game I am trying to figure out what would work best. I have the 460 No excuses- going to shoot them this weekend, but when I was looking at the Precision Rifle page that really good BC caught my eye. Thanks for any inputs.

What rifle are you using? The load data you reference with that 450 grainer is using 120 grains of powder and a 150 yard zero. Have you shot a 450 grain bullet ahead of 120 grains of powder?

I have the knight bighorn with 26" barrel. I have not had a chance to shoot it at all yet. I am heading to the range this weekend and was looking to pick up a few different bullets to see what shot well.

As I recall the Washington rule is all lead - no sabot - so if the QT is in a sabot it is out.

You might want to check out the Hornady Great Plains (385 grains I think). Most of the big conicals are an order and wait situation, else I would suggest you try some of the Bull Shop stuff (post about conical source http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1471827).

My Colorado-legal elk load is currently a 410 gr. Hornady Great Plains lead conical. I use either 120 grains of 2F T7 or 130 grains of Pyrodex RS. A MMP Ballistic Bridge sub base is necessary with either of these heavy charges. Anotherload to consider is the 405 all-lead Powerbelt with 90 to 100 gr. of 2F Triple 7. Not as much range, but not as much recoil either.

Fast twist barrels are finicky conical shooters. You really need to buy a pack of those monster Precision conicals& try them out. They come unlubed. The two best buys there are the Keith Nose & Extreme Elites. The drop at 200 yards with either of these bullets will only be a few inches more at-most.

The two keywords to accuracy at 200 yards may not be "what bullet" or "what size".... it very well could be "what lube" and/or "what wonderwad".

Keep us posted as to your results this weekend... I'm always interesting in seeing who other rifles shoot...
