Default Barnes TMZ at the range

I finally got to try out the new Barnes TMZs. I am impressed. My Omega seems to love them, and I can load them , with just the right amount of pressure, with the yellow sabots that came with them (Knight brand). These should work well in all tight bore guns as the HPM24s were too loose, they would probably work good for a second shot with a dirty barrel. I was using the 290 gr and I tried different powders and charges.

Just as a side remark my Omega does not like Black Mag 3, I tried four different bullets from 250 SST to 385 gr Buffalo conicals. I couldn't get any of them to group, not even close. This may just be my gun but I cant use it.

The powder that did work was 777. I tried from 100 grs to 120 grs, every 5 grs., of both 2F & 3F. I got excellent results with 120 grs. of 2F. My best group, at 50 yds, was a 3 shot measuring 5\8 inch center to center (one ragged hole. I didnt have enough room to shoot 100 yds. but I did try a few shots at 80 yds. and the impact point wasat nearly the same spot. My groups were about 1 1\2 inch. Didnt have as solil a place to set my bench so they probably could have been better.

I will try to get to shoot from farther away the next time. These will be my hunting bullets this year.

Mayguy,

If you remember, what volume of charges did you try with the BM3 and the 385 conicals? Thanks.

Happy Hunting, Phil

I didnt't realy try alot of powder volumes with the conicals-- 90grs. & 115 grs. of BM3. The groups were sooooooo BIG I didn't try very many shots. Maybe if I had tried more I could have gotten them down to a reasonable size for close work. I really didn't plan on hunting with them.
