Default Variflame

I bought one of these kits at Cabelas and I was impressed. I shot 30 times and pulled the breech plug on my Encore and it wasn't that bad, just wiped it out and kept going. Basically all it is, is a brass bushing milled to 209 primer size specs and you insert a small rifle, large rifle primer into it. They are reloadable. Worked great with Pyrodex pellets. The whole poing of them is the fouling of the breech pug using 209 primers is that the hot primer going off through a small hole causes all the breech plug fouling. I also shot the Kleenbores and there was a significant amount of fouling compared to the Variflame system. You can read the write up about them on www.prbullet.com. I thought is was a gimic thing, but what the heck. Anyone else tried them and if so, what was your take on them. Cabelas sells them for about $24.00 for the kit which includes 10 reloadable/reusable primer housing. 100 CCI400 primers cost 1.95.

I've never used one, but I have heard from others that they had good results reference breech fowling using them. What I find interesting is 100 of those primers compared to the cost of 100 shotgun 209 primers. When you see Remington Kleenbore Primers in Wal Mart for $5.95 it makes onea little angry. Typical company raking the sportsman over the coals in my book.

Glad that the vari-flame is working good for you.

I guess if I was having problems with good old 209 primers I might do something about it but as with the .25ACP conversion I just don't feel the need for something like that it ain't that hard to clean a gun and you have to clean it no matter what you prime with so again I will go with the gimmick thing.

Besides I can buy 209s for the same price or less than rifle primers we have an exellent reloading supply store not far from where I work.

txfireman,we sort of depend on each other here. If you would consider runing a few tests like shooting a target with variflame and one with 209's with your best load at say 100yd, I for one would be very interested as I have been considering trying them.Put a picture on if you can or write a report. [some advertising says they are supposed to group better]Thanks Lee

I originally saw these on a web site by R&P muzzleloading. The reason for the variflame was a 209 primer is to hot for most muzzleloaders. They put a ramrod into the barrel ofI think an Omega, primed it with a 209, pulled the trigger and the ramrod moved up about 3-4 inches. When they did the same test with the variflame adapter it moved much less, ergo they say a 209 primer can push your charge up the barrel before a full powder burn and results in flyers. While the lesser centerfire pistol primer does not have enough power to push the charge, but enough flame to burn the powder resulting in better accuracy.

As soon as the rain stops after this week end, I plan on doing some tests with the Variflame and Remington Kleen Bore primers and 250 gr. Shockwaves. I love that bullet. I'll let yal know how it went

Iam really interested in your results with the variflame. If you are ever wondering about how hot primers are go to a shotgun reloading manual and see what chamber pressures are when used with different primers and same powders.

I wonder if there wil be some of these available for large rifle and pistol primers ? Actually if there was a small metal lathe available it should be easy to make them. Lee

The large rifle primers and pistol primers will fit into the Variflame bushing. I have some CCI 400 Small rifle and large rifle primers I bought for it and they both work in it. These bushings are designed to hold any centerfire primer so you can customize your primer load for which ever powder you shoot, whether its loose or pellets.
