Lube or not lube conicals ?

Maxi's are tapered bullets so that thing must be big enough to allow the larger band on the bullet to just fit snug. Might not work as well with non-TC conicals. But ah'm still werkin on it.

T7 that would still have to be a lot neater than the method I use now! Talk about excess, I just hold the nose of the bullet in a piece of tubing and then dip the bullet in melted lube. The sizing die gets most of it but there is always excess to deal with, especially on the base.Hate to pay 100 or more for a sizer-lubricator -and all the dies/nose-punches that would be required add up quick. Save one heck of a lot of time though (but whut kinda truble would ah git into then? ).

I just bought one of those T/C lubers on ebay for $3.50 and $2.50 s&h.
For a .54 cal. I also saw one in 45 cal.

ive tried the luber with 370 gr. 50 cal. maxi balls and all i got was a BIG MESS. that tool is horrible and im thinking thats why they dont sell it anymore. the problem is that the bore butter you can buy at the store is different than the lube that comes with a pre- made 20 pack of maxi balls. the bore butter you get at the store seems to have a lower melting point LIKE RIGHT AROUND BODY TEMPERATURE. I have looked for a stiffer lube and even tried to partially refridgerate the bore butter but it ends up getting too hard and wont work with the lube tool. i remember someone on here saying they use liquid alox with no problems but i think that stuff is petroleum based. what i do now is just use an old plastic case from the store bought maxiballs and fill the individual square boxes with a bunch of the bore butter. i then just push the un-lubed bullets into the goo. when i load my rifle i wear a pair of thin vinyl gloves or latex and just smooth out the excess into the groves of the bullet. this is the easiest method i have found. maybe some one else has a better trick?

Today I decided to try some different maxiball out of my .54 caliber Renegade. I had some 430 grain Maxiball some 533 grain minnie ball, 405 grain Powerbelts with hollow points, and some 411 grain Maxiball. I lubed using a homemade castor oil solid lube mix.

The target on the left shows the powerbelts marked with a black arrow. In my opinion with 90 grains of Goex 2f the Powerbelts did not do very well. My Lyman Trade rifle shoots them much better then my Renegade. The Renegade did shoot the the 411 grain Maxiball which all hit in the green circle. I used 80 grains of Goex 2f and a home made wonder wad under them.

The target on the right shows the 430 grain Thompson Center Maxiball without a wad. I was shooting 80 grains of Goex 2f under them. They grouped very well in the green circle. The minnie ball I shot with 60 grains of Goex 2f and had them teflon taped. They sprayed all over the place.

This shooting was done at 30 yards off a bench rest with the standard old style sights on the .54 caliber Renegade.

Cayugad,Today I was a the local swap meet and pick up a couple of hole punches 5/8 inch for 5 buckes, Ithought at the time this was the same size as the wonder wads but when I got home and compared them the punches were a tad to big,I think the wonder wadsare are 1/2 inch.
Will the 5/8 inch wads I intend to cut work? Remember these are for a .54 cal.

1/2 inch for the .50 caliber and 9/16 for the .54 caliber
