Best Sabot for T/C omega
 

I Just picked up a new omega for a trip to southern Illinois, maybe shooting 150yds. which Sabot/ Pyrodex/ 777 combo out of the box would you reccomend?

FIRST - Welcome to the forum!
Check out the post on Recent Bullet Test - the rifle used was an Omega.
BTW - for long range shooting, the new Barnes T MZ - it's a boat tail Hollow Point with a plastic tip for better B.C.

My Omega likes ShockWaves the 50/40 200gr groups under an inch with 150 gr.s of several different powders; according to what I have read on seversl forums other people are having the same results so you might want to check them out. Look up the graph sabotloader made for me this is a real 150yd load if it groups for you. Lee

I do not think you will really know until you actually start shooting. TC Omega/Encores can have really tight barrels. It would be my suggeestion that you start shooting projectiles distributed by TC, one of the reason that the bores might be a tad tight so that you will shoot their products.

Probably, but not positive, you will end up shooting an MMP HPH-24 or Harvester sabot. You may even need to shoot .451 projectiles instead of .430's. For now the the thinnest sabot you can purchase is the Harvester "crush rib" if you need to go that route.

If you are just starting to shoot ML's PowerBelts or Harvester SaberToooths may be the easiest option, the PowerBelts are expensive but are easy to load. A lot of people have a lot of success hunting with these bullets but I would not recommend themfor hunting.

Powder - might be the next advice, I shoot T7-ffg loose powder, but it is not the only option out there. Again starting out I might suggestTriple Seven pellets - easy to load hard tomake a mistake, but as soon as you are comfortable I would make the switch to loose powder - less expensive and allows you to develope a load for your rifle.

Your post does not identify you as someone that is just getting into the sport but if you are Cayugad has some really good write ups for this kind of request when he gets on line and sees this message I am sure he will respond with some great suggestions.

If you just took the rifle out of the box and have little to no experience with muzzleloaders, get a box of pellets for your first time out. Some Pyrodex pellets in 50 grains. Load two pellets and a 200 or 250 grain Shockwave. I think that will put you out there around 150 yards. By the way, that rifle can shoot three pellets.

If pellets are too expensive, then get a pound of loose Triple Se7en FFg. Also make sure you have some gun cleaning patches for swabbing the barrel with and a good swab solution. Swab the barrel between shots with one or two wet/damp patches and then make sure you run dry patches until they feel dry to you touch.

If your shooting pellets get some Winchester W209 primers. If shooting loose then some of the Remington Kleenbore Primers will work fine.

Also get some of the 240 grain T/C MagExpress XTP's and try them. Lets not hope you have one of them super tight bores I have been reading about. You might even want to get a range rod, a short starter, cleaning jags, and shockwave loading joags before heading out.

Yes welcome: I recently purchased an Omega, and
yes mine has a very tight bore. After some work to
remove rough spots in the barrel, mine shoots the
Harvester crushrib .451 sabot with the Barnes Expander
300gr./.451 bullet very well. Not easy to load but
with steady pressure, no problem. Inch & half groups
at 25yds. but weather has kept me from doing all
testing at 50--100yds. I can assure you there is help
a plenty here. Again welcome. Danny

Buy them both at the same place. The bullets are 100-pk - so buy two packs of Harvester plastic sabots. This combo loads relatively easy - no grunting. Use 80-90 grains F777 FFF loose. Sight in 2-3" high at 100 yards. Stays somewhat flat out to 150 yards.... maybe 2" low.
