Default Winter Park area hunt

Lord willing, this Oct. 15th I will be on my first ever Elk hunt. I have been piking everyones brain as to what I need. This place looks like the best way to find out that info.
My list includes:
'06 - old stanby kills everything I shoot at
it loves 180 BT.
Binoculars
compass & GPS
BOOTS! this is where I have no clue! I use waders to get to my stand and Icemans in the stand to keep from our subzero week of Whitetail hunts. I know that wont work.
I would like some advice on this specific because of the imporance of breaking them in now! Thanks

ps. what is it like near Winter Park? Will be packing in 6 miles with horses and setting up camp.
Thanks folks, I am a brand new poster

For the Boots... Danners. You won't regret spending the extra money and buying a quality boot after going on a hunting trip with them.

Danner, White, Meindl, Asolo, Vasque, Crispi & etc... They all have great models.

People will shell out between $200 - $550 for a great pait of boots but wince when it comes to spending $20 on a pair of socks like Thor-lo, Bridgedale & Lorpen.

The best advice I can give to alot of your guys that are getting into Backpack hunting and the more harsh terrain hunting is to stop looking for all your gear in the Cabela's catalog. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Cabela's. I have actually hunted with Jim Cabela, you would have never guessed the guy owned the joint, and he was a great guy.

Do they have some great products in there? Yes!

Should you get all your stuff from there? No!

The bottomline is that Cabela's for the most part carries clothing & footware made by companies that are catering to hunters. As a whole, we hunters are very unsophistcated when it comes to equipment, especially, when compared to the mountaineering/trekking/climbing communities.

Stuff made by companies that cater to those communities is a decade ahead of the stuff that we hunters are getting from 'our' companies. Material, weight, durability and comfort are all better.

About the only stuff that I buy anymore for the traditional hunting clothing manufacturers is some outerwear but I am exteremly selective. I like the River's West stuff quite a bit but I am really digging Mossy Oak Apparel's new APX outershells.

Default Thanks, bullet?, and area #

Thank you gentleman, I appreciate the help on the boots.

Concerning the Bullet type, I was told the 180 balistic would be excellent for elk, but since I read your reply I looked for something new. What I found was that Nosler last year came out with a 200 grain accubond. I was told that this was designed for elk specifically. What do you all think?

Hey thanks again!
