Don't know anything about bear hunting but I hope you post your adventure after the hunt. I would enjoy reading about it. Good luck!

I hope you're careful and maybe even have someone to back you up.

Personally, I'm quite content never to see a Grizzly bear up close in person. I never have. But I've talked to a few people who have. The last Elk hunter I talked to who had one within 50 yards of him still didn't have his color back in his face the next day. He was pretty subdued and didn't talk too much of what it was like without being asked. I think it shook him up pretty good.

I've heard that in areas where they're more used to people, some will hear the reports from a rifle of a hunter shooting a deer or Elk and come running, like it's the dinner bell. Something that big that can pickup an Elk and run off with it, you have to respect and take care when you're in their territory.

Grizzly encounters are a little unerving. I had two at 30 yards this year. The only consolation was they had no idea I was there. It was not too bad, but bad enough. Far worse in my opinion is fishing for salmon and turning around to see a bear 50 yards or so fishing the same hole as you.

Still, the bears are amazingly tolerant and 999 out of 1000 times do the right thing. We typically have two or three maulings a year up here in Alaska which is really nothing when you consider how many people encounter the bears during the year.

I had one come about 25 yards from me while moose hunting. When he saw me he just watched me for a minute or so then walked away. About two minutes later my heart starting beating again. I had a Marlin 45-70 at the time but I had no desire to have to use it.

jj, you did not mentioned Caliber you intend to use. I would'nt take anythig less than .338MAG.

for Black's a .35REM and Brown,s a .300MAG, but Grizz's .338MAG.
This is my opinion. There are many hunters out there that will take them
with less, but have been shooting for years. I have taken Black's in Alberta with
Winchester 94 Carbine in .35 REM.

Jen, where is 4-38? I lived between 4-22 and 4-23 near Golden for a few years and never hunted them but seen my share while back packin in the Bug a boos. Somewhere between Golden and Radium is some Crown land in Glacier and a client had wounded a bear and it ran off in the bush. Instead of the 2 guides going back to camp and retreive the dogs, they elected to persue it through the bush. Not too smart as they both were mauled to death.
I had 3 cubs and a sow here on the property last year, and they were terrorizing the neighborhood. The sow had charged two or three vechiles coming up my road and at one time the sow wouldn't let a lady out of her house. The FWP's brought three traps up but never caught them. I have very much respect for them and when I'm slipping through the bush prior to light being nice and quiet, you can bet my a$$ is puckered tight hoping that I don't encounter one. Good Luck Bobby
