Default Idaho Mulies

Hi-

Am supposed to make the trip this fall to SW/Central Idaho for the first week of elk, rifle season. I am pondering whether I should buy the muley tag as well. No doubt, if I don't, I'll probably see the buck of a lifetime....that's usually how it works

I'll be hunting in the Sawtooths and around Boise National Forest.......

My question is: what is the Muley population like in this area and is this an area for larger (28"+) bucks or does this area see a lot of hunting pressure and consequently, bucks don't get to maturity?

Thanks
JJ

I live in Central Idaho. Back in the late 80's or early 90's, somewhere in there, the Fish and Game did a late season hunt for bucks. This cleared the big bucks out of the country along with the genetics. They are just now barely starting to come back. Most of the bucks you see around here are just at their ears. I hunt for elk in the high country and Rarely see a decent buck during October. There is a lot of hunting pressure too. It also depends on what unit your hunting. Good luck findin a biggin around here in general!

jjwillie-

Sorry but I have never hunted that unit before. I have heard a lot of people from Shoup say there are pretty good bucks in the middle fork country. I don't know when the rut starts there, but here(21A), if you circle a bunch of does toward the last few days of hunting season(Oct. 22)you can usually find a good buck close by. To my understanding, that country is real isolated. You may not even see another hunter. I would be interested to hear about that country and your hunt. Good luck.
