Default Do pronghorns jump over fences?

I hunted pronghorn antelope near Gillette, Wyoming this last October for the first time. The owners of the ranch where I hunted told me that, contrary to what all the books tell you, pronghorn antelope do jump fences now. They have learned to jump fences. It seems I even witnessed this myself, but at this moment my recollection is dim on this point. On the other hand, I recall seeing two bucks separated from a small group of 8 does by a fence who nervously milled around the fence, moving back and forth, evidently trying to find a place where the fence was down to cross over. They were probably nervous because they knew I was attempting to stalk up on them, but they evidently found a way across because by the time I reappeared within rifle range they were gone.

Have you ever seen pronghorn jump over fences? Maybe just pronghorn in specific areas have learned this skill. I have been told or read that at least formerly pronghorn didn't know how to jump because their natural environment did not have obstacles -- blown over trees, for example -- which they needed to jump over.

I have watched them jump over a fence with my own two eyes. 99.9% of the time they will go under fences. The fence I watched them jump was a 6"x 6" square panel wire fence. The fence was 4-foot high.

I've never witnessed it myself but I am sure they do, but when hunting them, hunt along the fence line as they'll usually travel parallel to it. Good luck, Bobby

Nope never witnessed it, the lopes I have seen when encountering a fence usually go under single file or travel along vs over. Not saying they can't or won't, just never seen them do so.

They hate jumping fences. They will avoid it if at all possible, but doesn't mean they never do it. I have never seen it, but talked to several who have.

I have seen it with my own 2 eyes!!! Especially when feeling pushed they will do whatever is necessary to get away. BTW, the fence that I saw multiple antelope jump was over 5 feet tall. How do I know? Well, at the time, I was 5'4 and the fence was taller than me.

I have hunted pronghorn two diferent times and both times in the area we hunted we saw them jump fences. Most of the time they did go under or fallow the fence to an opening like a gate. Most of the times I think it was a lone buck we saw jumping fences not a whole heard.

I've seen it with my own eyes - twice as a matter of fact. Outside of casper, Wyoming.
