Default wanted: info on elk on my own in dec/ late nov.

i am hoping to go out west this year for an elk. it probably can't happen until dec or late nov. because of work. i feel pretty good about doing it on my own, i have relatives who have done it successfully for years, i'm sure i can borrow their equipment like wall tents, etc. where is my best bet for an over the counter tag that late in the year, sex isn't important. most likely this will be on public land to make it as affordable as possible. i have traveled out west to colorado before, so i know a little bit what the terrain is like there( took passroads from breckenridge to grand junction, camping along the way/) i also have a chance to hunt in wyoming for elk with someone that has a cousin who lives there as an option. they have done it on their own succesfully also. any help will be appreciated. oh yeah, not into the horse deal, but driving 100 miles into the middle of nowhere won't bother me.

Colorado Division of Wildlife has interactive mapping software on their website that you can use. I suggest going there and setting it up to look for the elk wintering grounds. That late in the year there is usually pretty deep snow in the mountains and the elk are looking for easy food. Wintering grounds is where I would concentrate my efforts for a December hunt.

There are tons of good public land hunting so to suggest on over another is hard. I hunt in the White River National Forrest. There are very good numbers of elk and a surprisingly good number of record book size bulls.
