What is your definition of best? Is it the best #'s? That would be Colorado. Is it the best quality? That would have to be a toss-up for # of elk versus bull score between Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico. Is the best referring to the access and availablity of tags? That would have to go to probably Colorado or Wyoming.

There are many different ways to view the "best" elk hunting. It all depends on what you expect or want.

PapaD, If you are looking for a place to hunt elk, CO is going to be one of the few states you can buy a tag over the counter for archery or rifle. We have a lot of public land and a lot of elk. But we have high elevation and coming in from the flat lands it will kick you hard, be ready.

I agree with both charlie brown and gselkhunter, and I'll also add it depends on who you ask? Where they live? And how much experience they have? What matters most is for you to explore your options and figure out what type of hunting and terrain will suit you best and make plans from that info. For some I might be a horseback general hunt in the wilderness, others it will be a once in a lifetime trophy draw unit. It all depends on you, and the good thing is you have a lot of options. Good luck!

The Apache reservation in San Carlos. But hunts there start in a 5 digit price range. There have been several bulls over 400 B&C there.
