Default shot a cow (elk)

I got back yesterday from a cow elk hunt near Craig, CO. I can't believe what a great time I had. My dad and I were able to get the time to hunt together for the first time in a very long time. And with him being 70, who knows now many times we'll be able to do something like this again. For anyone whose dad was a great teacher and inspiration as a hunter, like mine was / is GO hunting together while you can! I shot a very large cow and darn it, Dad missed his shot. We split the meat though, so we'll both be eating good this year. Now if I could just fill another deer tag..... Jim

Jim, Way to go! The important lesson is that it isn't the size of the rack that counts, it the company that you keep. And you had the best.

2, Jim

Any mature elk is a trophy IMHO. What a great experience for you and your dad. Smart of you to "get it while you can" --- never mind time lost, go from here forward. Good of you to split the meat. That is what we do in our elk camp, everone who hunts gets an equal share of all the animals and all the cuts. We call it "tribal hunting" and it really helps foster a cohesive group IN TERMS OF people not getting sulky when they don't get an animal in a given year.

Can't wait to head out with the "war party" come next year! Only I'll be the Dad taking out my two sons, somewhere along the line, it will be them taking me out and then they can start taking on the brunt of the work --- yeah right. Great tradition/heritage building.

Congrats to you both. I have hunted bug game with my dad since I was 12 and have been offered many a elk hunting trip with the fellas and always turn them down just because I want to hunt with my dad for as long as I can. I too do not hunt for horns I hunt for the meat, but most of all I hunt for the fun of being in the outdoors!!

Why not take dad with you on the elk trip?

Congrats on the elk.

It's kinda funny when we are young teenage wise @sses we just can't stand to have our parents around. As we get older we can never seem to find enough time to spend with them.
My father was my first hunting partner till I was old enough to hunt on my own and even now we keep time in the season to get and do some hunting.

Again Congrats on a finished elk hunt.Only 11 months till next season.
