Default Got my first antelope!

Just returned from my first western hunt for antelope. Everybody in our group scored and we had a great time and hunt. Crossing into the USA was easy with the right paperwork and everybody we dealt with was great. Can't wait to return. We all shot too early and could have taken better bucks but being newbies to antelope hunting we had to do some learning fast. All advice prior to my hunt was bang on and a member here put me on to the hunt itself. This site is a great resource tool!!!!

Terry M, Where are you from and where did you hunt? Here in Alberta I only get drawn for Trophy Antelope about every 5 or 6 years or so. But I love to hunt pronghorns. I have often thought about taking a trip to the states where a permit can be got accross the counter and hunting there.

Yep----hunting Antelope is just plain fun !! Great thing about it if you blow the stalk---don't worry there will more a few miles down the prairie. You learn a lesson the hard way. Don't shoot the 1st one. But everyone does it.

I love watching them RUN !!! Man the are fast.

Duffy,
I live in Ontario, so it was a 24 hour drive for me. Should be less for you. We all drew tags easily and also bought doe tags. Checked the zone on the Wyoming website and draw success was over 90%.
As for rifle used, I used a Sako Finnlight 7mm rem mag with a Leupold VARIX II 3x9 on it. Its my flattest shooting rifle so it was an easy choice. THese little buggers are not hard to kill but the shots were quite long so a flat shooter that bucks wind is very important. I was the only guy carrying a rangefinder and took my buck at 403 yds through the heart (1 shot) and my doe at 326 yds (1 shot also). The others did alot of missing, mostly because of poor range estimating. I would not have done as well without the rangefinder. We hunted area 28 north Of Douglas.

Prarie goat hunting is pure fun. While I love to hear bulls bugeling, in terms of pure fun antelope ranks at the top. All day your stalking, thats what hunting is all about.
