Default Elk - opening weekend in Colorado - Archery

I took this 5x4 Bull Elk on the second day of archery season (August 29) at about 5:30 in the evening. It was a 22 yard shot over a small water hole I had been sitting on since noon. He went about 300 yards (dropped down the back side of the mountain). It is a 2 mile hike in but well worth the trek. I took a nice 5x4 Mule deer at the same water hole and a 4x4 Bull elk about 600 yards down the mountain last year. He must have suffered an injury to his left antler when he was young. It comes out of head a little low and back. This was also the side which had four points.

Nice animal. I love hunting waterholes. I just wish it didn't have to be so dry to make them effective. Great Hunt.
